Default IMDB - Once a godsend, now send it away

    G'day,

    [rant]

The Internet Movie Database has been around for years. Over a decade, I would think. Whenever I've wanted to know something about a film, or television show, I go there first. Or, I used to...

Over the past few years especially, they have been becoming more and more money driven. HEAPS of ads on every page, pushes to get you to subscribe (for money) to the IMDBPro... and now, limiting the information you can view if you do not become a paying member.

I used to regularly contribute information to IMDB in the early days. No record of exactly how many episodes of Fatty & George, or who wrote/produced/directed? I know that - here's the info, no prob. Now... I wouldn't bother. Why should I offer something to them for free, when they're not willing to share the information for free?

I realise they have moderators and data entry people etc to keep the site updated... but if it was "working" before, why do they suddenly need so much fiscal support now?

Now... Wiki, tv.com, or half a dozen other sites can give me the information... If nothing else, it shits me every time I load up their front page, try to click on the search box to - search - but instead it suddenly moves, because the ads above suddenly load up and push the search box down...

    [/rant]

    cheers

Though they seem to be pushing all of those cash buttons, the design and functionality tools seem barely to have moved in recent years as well. The site looks dated too.

Did all the things you mentioned started coming in when they got acquired by Amazon?

Haha, I used to add stuff too. My proudest IMDB moment was adding Andrew Shue as an uncredited extra in 'Cocktail'. Yep, making a difference, one uncredited extra at a time.

Amazon?! Well, that explains a lot... When was that?

I know they've long had a link somewhere which was along the lines of - "Do you wish to buy [whatever show you are currently looking at]", and a link to Amazon, but also usually it would include 1-2 other links as well.

Of course, what I'd want to buy was never available anywhere!

Ya, that pisses me off no end. But I shouldn't complain - I've used it heaps and have contributed nothing.

I don't begrudge people that haven't contributed But, maybe that is a large part of my gripe... It would be like Wiki turning around now and saying - now you've had a taste, please cough up or else you only get to view the first 100 words of each page...

I got tired of the site when the comments section started to become nothing but a cycle of:

"This is the best picture, evah!"
"No it's not, it's utter garbage"

Some of the information posted was/is useful, but I've started to find repeats in the "memorable quotes" and trivia sections.

Have to say I've never really bothered much with their comments section... Too painful to read, if nothing else.

That's a good point RE repeats... Considering they historically were always quite heavy handed in ensuring information supplied was accurate, now you mention it, I've seen plenty of double ups in things like bios and other sections too.

I use the iPhone app constantly - no ads to speak of, no comments from the peanut gallery, just filmic goodness.

Useful for knowing which episodes you have seen and what seasons/episodes have been released so far.

And Amazon bought it years ago, 1998 to be precise.

It got far better after they bought it. I'm not sure what's prompted the recent money-grubbing.

Also useful for resolving dinner party discussions about "that guy...who was in that film with what-her-name, you know...she had a bit part in that film you hated..."

IMDB, I've frequently admitted, has changed my life. Ok, no, it's just... Yeah - changed it. As snark says - you have a query, see someone you think you recognise, you just jump on IMDB and there's the answer, 9 times out of 10.

Though there are other sites out there, most tend to specialise... or simply not be as well designed.

But the more painful they make IMDB now to use... the less people will use it...

Yes, I second that. Perfect armchair companion, without having to fire the laptop up.

Agreed. Well made app, even made my front page.

There is still no forums though, but to be honest, that's probably a good thing.
