Check out this, I can't get it to work... but it seems to be a Google IM service emerging that you can access via iChat. (copied and pasted from Apple-x)
• Its true! This appears to be exactly what we predicted one year and one day ago.

If you already have a Gmail account, you're all set:

Server: talk.google.com
Username: youremail@gmail.com or youremail@talk.google.com
Password: yourpassword

For more info.

Connecting via iChat, Adium, Psi, as well as Gaim or Psi on Windows and Linux appear to be your best bets for getting on right now.

Adium and Gaim work with TLS encryption on, old-style SSL off, and no plaintext authentication. Psi seems to only work with plaintext authentication on.

Also of note, we have successfully had an iChat audio conference via Google Talk (although iChat's AV functions are somewhat independent of the type of server you are on). Right now, Google Talk does NOT interoperate with any other XMPP servers, such as jabber.org, but we expect that it will soon.

Lastly, feel free to try out "/me" in your conversations (works in iChat but not Adium).

I've been able to connect with Adium but since I don't actually know anyone with a Jabber account I can't confirm if it actually works.

One cool thing is that if you email another gmail user from your gmail account they get added to your talk.google buddies list. B)

I don't think you get all the features using iChat. All it would act as is another Jabber server which just happens to be hosted by Google.

If you use Google Talk (Windows only) all the cool features Google has put in are available

Check out a quick pre-review here: http://www.downloadsquad.com/2005/08...e-talk-review/

Also, I've tried out the new Google Desktop 2. It is EXCELLENT. Works exactly like spotlight and dashboard :P

It also works here. We Mac users don't get integration with gmail, or voice chat though. Also the /me works in ichat but not in the google chat client.

I wonder what could be instore with the Apple x Google thing going on... I smell more ichat functionality and Apple and google use jabber to eventually take down MSN. *ebil grin*

MSN has started to go the way of ICQ (despite ICQ still being rather popular). Too many useless features and things that get in the way. A simple IM client will take over, and then slowly gain excess features, and then we get to start over again...
Ideally, you could base an IM client on a bit-torrent -like technology, and then it's just a huge free for all.

I thought skype ran through servers for it's audio... since torrents are reliable, but not neccessarily fast... at least, not real-time fast.
Or do I not know what I'm talking about...

TMO (The Mac Observer) to Go Podcast - The Mac Geek Gab

The boys on this show have thousands of gmail invites that they will send you if you just email them and ask, for all those playing at home!

The O_M, i will track one down for you! Post if you have already got one and i won't worry!

This is really just msn through jabber into iChat for me, but its cool to have another webmail account and another jabber IM id - the encryption is not there yet it says the username and password is sent unencrypted - but i did it anyway!! Sometimes i just use Adium and then sometimes i swap back to msn - ho hum -

can't help but feeling something big is about to happen (not necessarily IM related) - just don't know what it is!!!

Cheers all

Unfortunately it doesn't support interoperability with other Jabber servers yet. Hopefully they will, but it's not certain yet. See also media release that I put out for jabber.org.au. Of course I'm still a firm believer of using an IM server that's fairly close by.

It worked yesterday but now I get this error message. I doubled checked the setup instruction at http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/ans...py?answer=24076

Has anyone else have this problem?

Ello again,

deadants - I have just been to the set up page on google and found that they have this at the top of the page!
Please note:
There are currently connection issues with the iChat client. We are aware of the problem and are working on it. Please expect a fix in the next few days. Thanks for your patience during our beta period
So that explains it! Hopefully it will be back to normal soon!
