Default Safari does not like *.gif

Is it just me or does Safari not like displaying gifs?

It's increasingly annoying when I scroll through forums and Safari 'locks', CPU usage skyrockets and I have to cross my fingers in the hope of Safari not folding in on itself.

I haven't bothered with any other browser as I prefer Safari but this is frustrating.

I am using the latest version 4.0.3 on X.Leopard.8 with the latest security update and I have 4GB of RAM.

    What can I do?

P.S. Sorry if this is in the wrong section, pls move and ban me if so

I do get this issue too, don't worry. Anyone with any ideas why this happens?

What happens if you go to this webpage and click on the "Safari Image Of Doom" link, just below the second paragraph?

Mind you Akshunhiro, that's pretty old news as things go but I thought why not see if there's some connection.

This is a bug in Core Graphics rearing its ugly head in Safari. You can pay apple for the privielege of fixing their own bug and buy 10.6 if you like, or use Firefox for GIF-heavy websites.

10.5 on my 1.9Ghz G5 likes GIFs just fine.

Hey Marto, that link worked and didn't crash Safari.

I think it's only with gifs >500k or something.

It's almost like it has to download it before it can display it properly.

Aw well, might have to upgrade!

I've not used Safari for around 2 years now.
The moment problems begin with a tool of any kind, I'll swap it for another.

I only use Safari in my emergency repairs partition for watching por... port douglas... pictures of port douglas. Yep.
