Default Apples release's Remote 1.3, Apple TV 2.4 to offer Multi-Touch™ gesture control

"Apple breathed some new life into its Apple TV media hub on Wednesday with upgrades to both its firmware and the iPhone's Remote app that let owners control the wireless media hub through multi-touch input on their handheld's touch-sceen," Aidan Malley reports for AppleInsider.

"The combination of Apple TV 2.4 and Remote 1.3 provides a new Control button that can be dragged into the bottom icon bar and serves as an alternative to the regular navigation controls on the iPhone or iPod touch," Malley reports.

"In the main menus, users can flick or drag a finger across the screen to scroll through items; a tap selects the current item. Pressing and holding on a "menu" item moves back up one level in the Apple TV's interface," Malley reports.

Is this the precursor of apps/games on the ATV using the iphone/ipod as a controller.. quite possibly I reckon..

Can't wait to go home and try this out. I think this is a pretty big hint at what might be possible in the near future.

It works ridiculously well, and as others have said- makes me geek out thinking what else is possible.

I want to see a new remote for the next hardware release. I envision something much like the iPod Touch but smaller and optimised for a viewing environment, such as auto dimming in low light, screen sleep but full touch control still available. I know we've got this app, but it has to run on devices that are multi-use (you have to answer the phone, use an app, etc.) and the remote app inevitably gets interrupted. For this reason I have never found a remote app to be better than a dedicated remote.

The remote app sucked for so long, finally it's useful. Love the 10 second repeat feature. Also like how the TV shows in ATV are now listed by date rather than alphabetically. Still hate how the Daily Show and Colbert are $3 an episode in iTMS, and how Internode don't allow free iTMS downloads. Thank God for my EyeTV...

Wish list is for the remote app to have a 10s Forward button too.

Played with it last night using films I'd converted and tv shows pushed / converted from EyeTV - found that the chapter system is forced on the data and this makes moving forward a lot more predictable. You can access chapters on a tv show / movie by using the downwards motion on the App while a show is playing. You'll see the blue progress line appear and if you look closely (hey we're quite far from out box!) you'll see the lines that mark the chapters.

Personally I found the scan / play system to be a lot quicker than before - I can now FF a show and hit play and it almost instantly plays - before there seemed to be a gap... and you'd skip forwards 2 more minutes.

I want to know why we can't use gestures on computer control and for audio playback.... that's all!

Whoah! Too much vitriol! The app did not "suck", it's just had a new feature added. Don't know why you're bitching about the price of Daily Show and Colbert Report. All episodes are $3. I bought a multi-pass for Daily Show, which gives me 16 episodes for $10. That's great value in my book. You're probably referring to the older episodes, as the multi-pass gives you the latest episode on the day you bought it, then 15 after that. I figured it's a topical show, so not as important to get the older episodes.

I'm guessing this is a differentiation feature to make the Apple TV more appealing. If you've got it, it's a special reward. If not, then it's another temptation to get one.

Okay, maybe I was a bit over the top. But it was only useful (for me) when content was synced (ie. stored on the ATV) whereas I preferred to stream.

I found that the remote app only worked if the program was actually playing on the ATV. But I couldn't select it from the library first (if I did that it would only play it on my computer).

I'd pay $3 for a 50 min show, but I refuse to pay that much for a 21 min episode. But I didn't notice the $16 for 10 deal. That makes it sweeter. I'll give it some thought...
