can i close the macbook if i have it connected to my tv?

seems a tad weird when the john is on the ground (nickname for new macbook) and he's open while watching something on the tv?

Connect to power, connect external keyboard, put computer to sleep by closing lid, wake up using keyboard, profit
OS X doesn't need viruses. The users **** up the system by themselves.

You can't, or it will go into whatever setting you have told it to go into when you close the lid. If you do want to close the MacBook lid, just make sure you set it to not turn off the screen or go to sleep.

    you close it first

then wake it up via a mouse or keyboard.

It's called "lid closed operation", "closed clamshell" or "closed display" mode
