Does anybody know of any OS X freeware or shareware apps to convert various video formats to .avi files.

    Haven't tried this but...

    http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/

The DivX codec for mac might output AVI compliant files via Quicktime.

That will work as long as you have Quicktime Pro

A better option will be using ffmpegX which is what most people use

    And its free!!!
