Go into the Inspector, and you'll find it under the first preference pane, document inspector under the 'info' tab.
    or
Click the 'edit' menu, go into 'writing tools' and click 'show statistics'

It tells you in the inspector, (view, inspector or the button in the toolbar if you don't know how to get it) then it should default to the document tab (with a page icon) and then click on the info button and it shows you the word count for the whole document or a highlighted section.

Good choice in choosing pages over word. The iWork suite is great isn't it.
