In the 'advanced' tab in Preferences, uncheck 'keep my iTunes library organised'. That will leave your files where you want them.
Hey guys
I'm hoping someone can help me out here? I love iTunes but i have one problem. i HATE how everything I play gets friggin imported into a library and it just builds and builds until without me realizing i have 2-3 copies of each of track.
Is there any Media player some one can recommend to me so that i can just play music from the directory i have it stored? Or is there a way iTunes can just play from directory rather than copy the file first?
Any help would be grateful...

In the 'advanced' tab in Preferences, uncheck 'keep my iTunes library organised'. That will leave your files where you want them.
And uncheck the 'copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library' isn't it?
Yeah, that too.
ahhhh thank champs!

Why not select show duplicates and remove duplicates manually?
What options are there apart from iTunes, though? What if you think the whole iTunes interface is fugly and counter-intuitive and suffering more bloat than an alpha build of Vista?
I still love and use Audion, but even though it's now free (and was Steve's first choice when he went hunting for software for his new music player) it's stuck in PowerPC Land ... what else exists that people like?
Not many decent alternatives besides iTunes and Audion it seems.. perhaps Winamp whilst running in Parallels? or perhaps another alternative like Floola? or Songbird?
Its old but it'll do![]()

to be honest? if winamp was ported for osx, with ipod support? I'd switch back to that in an instant!
There's Cog - http://cogx.org/
and Play - http://sbooth.org/Play/
And a bunch of others around.
I use VLC - like we all do - to play movie files of all descriptions. It's good to set it to the mp3 extension as well. If I want something in iTunes I drag into the library, if I want something played once, I'll double click and play in VLC.
