Default Iphone Apple and AT&T Why ?

Does anyone actually know why Apple went to AT&T its not like they dont have the money to make their own devices.
They never did a deal with Sony Records for Ipod's.

I would have though Apple would have done a Phonezone type deal with Apple Mobile Network across the country reselling though Optus or Telstra their own Product with their own phone across the world.
Maybe Vodafone or Virgin in the Europe.

Apple could have made Billions from doing this and get the phone out across the world at the same time.
Im just curious what did AT&T do for them exactly for them to not want to make Billions
Not to mention it would probably have the most market share for a phone in the world.

Then when their pockets seem a little empty release a 3G one in the UK and AUS forcing contract renewals

Apple do make their own iPhones (well, contract out to a Chinese manufacturer to build them). You seem to be a little confused!

The deal with AT&T is to provide access to a cellular network in the US, *and* change their voicemail system to provide Visual Voicemail (this is not a standard feature on any network). Apple have also cut a deal with AT&T where Apple get a kickback from each connection. Win-win for both companies.

Only thing is AT&T is seen as the equivalent of Telstra in the US. If Apple had gone with Verizon or T-Mobile, most people in the US wouldn't be looking at a way to unlock the phone, and would be reasonably happy with one of those carriers.

The other thing you forget that Apple is first and foremost a US-centric company. The rest of the world just happens to be a bonus :-)

The US cellphone market is even more locked down than here. Very few people, get unlocked phones and pay full price. If Apple were not to team up with AT&T, they would only be able to sell unlocked phones and there is the potential for no-one to carry their phone, which would then die a quick death.

The other reason is they want their hand in the call revenue pie.

The reason being that CDMA networks are a big thing in the US, half of the carriers are CDMA. CDMA phones are very difficult to unlock from their original carriers.
