hey all,

while looking for G4 PowerMacs for decryption on eBay, i spotted a 366 iBook. i've bid 200$ and have just been outbid.

my query is how high do you guys think i should go? and no outbidding me!!! <_<
i trust the people who are selling it, as I bought my PowerMac from them.

i want it for less than 300$, so maybe i should wait for them to have a few more... ?
I'd rather be posting from an Apple //c

Well I paid $450 3 months ago for one, which at the time was a huge bargain, considering it just sold for $800.

I would expect it to go for around $400 - $500, eBay is very hard to buy off, alot of idiots will bid alot more than an item is actually worth.

There are heaps of G3 iBooks on eBay... maybe bid on the others and see how it goes... I reckon it's very possible to get one for under $300.
If you do, let me know how it does with Panther, I'm interested in getting one if they work decently

they have some others that are only 300MHz models... they all have USB, so does that mean they'll ALL work with panther?
they also all have 6Gb harddrive and 64Mb ram, and i can immediately put the ram to 192Mb. so is the 66MHz more worth it do u think? because i reckon i can definitely get one of the others (the 300s not the 366) for ~200.

Something people seem to forget when they are in the market to buy something is that time is on their side.

It's not the end of the world if this sale goes by - if it's not right for you, wait until the next one that'll come along. Be patient, and you'll get the right sale for you. By all means, bid up to what you think is fair, but if don't go all out if you don't get it.

Personally, i'd say the 66 mhz are worth it - at that low spec, any speed is good speed. Wait out until you find a 366 that you can get cheaper.

Getting the 366 model would be better, as it is faster... espically on an old piece like that, it might be worth getting the extra 66MHz.

sometimes i do forget that, but not as much anymore.

i have decided not to bid more than i have, which is now $280... this has pushed the other guy up from winning at $202 to winning at $285!!! sucks to be him

anyway, i should be getting a 12" PBook from work soon so i'll wait it out.

Don't go over $450 if you're impatient, or $350 if you can wait for a few months to get lucky.

The key to buying on eBay is discipline - set yourself a maximum, don't make your first bid more than 60% of your max, and don't go over your max - EVER. Also, don't make you last bids until the last 15 minutes of the auction, and if you miss out, there are plenty more fish in the sea

Just as I predicted :P

The problem with buying off eBay is that there are alot of user that see 'Laptop, cheap, must have', rather than Mac users that know what the item is really worth.

There's *far* too many, someone bought a Dual 1GHz G4 for $200 less than a *brand new* Dual 1.25GHz G4 PowerMac.
Douche bags, all of em.
People paying $1,200 for a 500MHz iBook.
I hate eBay.

But soon, our trading forums will be open, and 2nd hand Macs will be bought and sold in Australia by people who love them and know what they're worth. Maybe they'll be opened today

Maybe I will be able to get a decent offer on my iMac if we had trading forums, instead of the friggin useless $150 I've been offered by two seperate companies.

A bloody iMac 350, perfect nick, Airport, 640MB RAM, 80GB HDD for $150. I don't think so stupid scam company. I could sell the Airport card for $150 alone!

Plus you know your iMac will go to a loving home

so how much you want for that iMac then?

i have two iBooks - one is blue one is black - the black one is runningpanther the blue one is running jaguar - i havent got a new lisence for panther yet so i figured i would leave it where it is... plus i might install darwin without the "apple extras" i just dont know yet...

anyway - both laptops have > 256megs ram and both are rock solid however the black one has a HUGE LOAD as it does the vpn for the office etc etc - they both also have airport in them and the black one acts as a base station in the office toooo - the blue one runs macstumbler (actually something similare) that monitors the wireless network for "break in" attempts

they also both do mail, dns, web

i spend my time on a pismo - with panther...

EDIT: forgot - you can get ibooks for arround 500 with 3month warantee...

The question of buying through eBay is absolutely a matter of research and discipline. Check current values, ePinions is one good site for evaluation, then make your conversion to AUD$ which will give you realistic approximation. Determine what value it is to you and either bid to your max via eBay or consider eSnipe. I, for one, would be interested to hear other opinions on eSnipe. I am aware that many dislike it, but I have made many successful buys using it and avoided the pressure. Also there are a few sites for Mac specs which also offer current valuations <USA, naturally, but converted, they are similar>. To sum up, I would say that if you got the item for the price you determined, then be satisfied. Chances are a better price will happen in the future, as it is a natural consequence of technology. Remember Mac SE was AUD$5,000+ in '89 and now?
