Thread: Doctor Who!

I was going to have a gripe about how the new series is handling regeneration... after seeing the Master regenerate basically the same way the Ninth did... my thoughts were - hey, I let it go last time cos of the Time Vortex Energy... but not again!?

But... after considering the issue... even the original series never settled on one particular method of regeneration... the Fifth's being the most different... [I even liked the Seventh's, though his gurning almost ruined the moment] So I guess I can't really complain - just hope maybe they will follow the tradition - do it differently each time... (as I guess this time they needed the unfamiliar viewers to recognise the process, hence using the same visual effect as before..)

RTD said as much in the Doctor Who Confidential that followed.

That's not a spoiler, that was obvious from the Face of Bow's final words in "Gridlock" to the Doctor, "You are not alone."

The Doctor is the last Timelord, or so he thinks. The only conclusion you can draw from the Face's words is that the Master has survived (The Master always was a survivor, anyway.)

A Question to those Doctor Who fans of the new series... (ie not familiar with the old series)

Did the revelation of "the Master" do anything for you?

Obviously Mr. Saxon is the Master...
He must overthrow British government or something.

Another idea - Saxon is an anagram of 'Axons' isn't it - just a thought...
Who knows what those globe-creatures could be...

It seems fairly predictable, but I'm still watching every bit of it...

Mention of UNIT might mean we'll see another old favourite, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, back again...
It seems unlikely, but it would be a nice touch.

Think of it - UNIT and the Master in one story - it actually seems likely he will be back - if Nick Courtney is still alive, of course, I haven't checked.

Nick is alive... but I can't picture him back in the saddle as the Brig... as he said last appearance, "I'm getting to old for this". And whilst I'd love to see UNIT *he haughtily says, referring back to HIS "Doctor Who" revamp plan*, I think they were well and truly neutered in the invasion stories in the first (new) season...

Mister Saxon is actually an anagram of "Master No. Six" and Yana from "Proffessor Yana" is an acronym of "you are not alone" - the last words of the Face of Boe.

Not that I'm a die hard Dr. Who fan or anything....

    Oooohhhh!!!!

I was looking at Mr Saxon and thinking - No.. there's no "T" or "E" to make Master... Master No. Six!! Oh god! Totally missed it!

And of course, for the uninitiated...

    Roger Delgado
    Peter Pratt
    Geoffrey Beevers
    Anthony Ainley
    Eric Roberts

were the previous actors to play the Master... Of course, Prof Yana... isn't he number 6... making Saxon 7?

EDIT: And... I AM A DOCTOR WHO FAN... so proclaimed in the last essay I submitted at Uni...

The episode guide for "Utopia" on the BBC website has Pratt/Beevers listed as a single incarnation - which he is - so John Simm would be #6.

Edit: Oh, and the Tipple Master doesn't count, apparently. This seems fair enough as he didn't have any lines in the Movie.

Bah...now I'll have to watch it to check :P

Edit: Okay, okay! You're right, it was Saxon. Oh and I am so glad he didn't keep the runaway bride as a traveling companion.

Isn't Romana still in E-Space? Or did I miss something...

*edit* I'd assumed it was Romana that the Face was talking about (and that E Space was about to come back into the series).

    OK... so I'm an idiot

But if she still is in E-Space then the 'last timelord' thing was a furphy anyway.

    *edit 2*

I am aware of the 'non canon' novels that have Romana returning from E-Space to Galiphrey (and ending up as President what's more, but I find it hard to take a motorbike riding Ace, Leela and 2 K9's being necessary in a story line (so as I said... non canon... so to be ignored).

From what I've read, RTD wrote an article in DWM (or an Annual) that had Romana as President of Gallifrey in the lead up to the Time War - her "Act of Master Restitution" (see the opening scenes of the movie) was apparently an attempt to ease tentions between the Time Lords and the Daleks. Now, that may not be "canon", but RTD is in charge of the new series.

Actually I was wondering about the Masters regeneration. I thought he was out of regenerations, didn't he used to steal new bodies or something? Or did something change that?

Geof - E Space is supposedly still out there, but the CVEs that lead there were unstable, and closed, thus cutting it off from our world, and thus essentially making it... well, not count in "our" world.

And as for Romana becoming President... I'm with you... Some of the NA's I didn't mind too much... but some of them just went... way out there. (Mind you... my own ideas for story lines could no doubt be considered out there too...)

DJY - Loved that scene, as the TARDIS dematerialised, and the Doc was left there... first time I believe it's ever happened... Well - first time the Doctor's seen the TARDIS dematerialise without him... (Adric flew it, but it was Romana left behind... and to be fair - she stepped back as it dematerialised, so Capt Jack holding on... which first made me roll my eyes... I decided was ok, especially as he died from doing it... Oh and Tegan also made the TARDIS take off, but not with the Doc present.)

Jolyon - Hopefully RTD will give it away within 2 years... Just watching the special features on the "Survival" DVD... so many times mentioning that JN-T stayed too long...

Optogamut - Yeah..... technically as far as I know the Master's regenerations were finished, hence him stealing Tremas' body, and then being offered a new regen cycle in "The Five Doctors"... I guess we could assume that he was forgiven during the Time War and offered new lives...
