Default Apple Mail - 'New Message' alert no longer appearing!

13.3" Macbook Pro Mid 2012/4GB Ram/500GB HD, running OSX 'Mavericks' 10.9.5

Just recently I've noticed Apple Mail (Version 7.3, Build 1878.6) has stopped putting the little red 'New message' icon at the top of the Mail icon when a new message arrives in my inbox. I haven't changed anything, it's just stopped putting the little icon there, although if I move the pointer over the open Mail application in the 'Dock' it does still tell me of any unread messages. I did go into Utilities to 'Verify Disk Permissions' then 'Repair Disk Permissions', but that's made no difference. I don't want to mess with deleting Mail's preference files in case I do something wrong as it might just be a case an option in Mail's preferences menu has somehow been turned off although I can't see anything there that would do that. I do check my messages quite regulariy so its not a critical issue, but still I'd like the 'New Message' flag back.
