Default Deleting old back ups off external HDD? Taking forever

Deleting a lot of old directories / back ups off my external hard drive. GO into trash no problem but when I empty trash have to wait to recognise 500k + files to be deleted. I actually force ejected the HDD yesterday. The trash had the deleted files in it before ejecting it but when I disconnected the HDD the trash was empty. Are the trashed files on the external drive retained on the external drive?

Every time I connect the external HDD to the computer the trash is full again, sit and wait an hour to recognise all the files again and then comes up with an error. Anyway I can wipe them off? Looks like they're lost in space.

In future is there any quick method for emptying trash like that without the machine trying to recognise every file?

If there is nothing else on the disk, format it.
