Using iCloud to backup iPhone 5 and restore to iPhone 6S

Hi all

I've just grabbed the new iPhone 6S and in the process of backing up my old iPhone 5.

I normally back up and sync using iTunes however since the latest iOS update my iTunes version of 11.6 running on Snow Leopard OS is no longer compatible.

So there goes my idea of restoring my back to the new iPhone 6S.

I'm now thinking of backing up the iPhone 5 via iCloud so I can then use this back up version to setup my new iPhone 6S.

I've never used iCloud so I'm new to this, will it work?

I've noticed iCloud only allows for 5gb storage, my iPhone 5 is 16gb. Does this mean it will not back it all up?

Appreciate any advice or feedback.

I had a 5 and went to a 6S. I too had always backed up to iTunes but went with an iCloud backup this time.

Because it was an initial iCloud backup, it took a long time. I plugged the phone in, switched on Wi-Fi, changed the Auto-Lock to never. And waited. And waited some more. I did have to buy some extra iCloud storage though.

Then I started the setup of my 6S, restored from iCloud, clicked on the apps so they would download, and I was all done.

iCloud only back up user data such as photos, contacts, documents, etc... mostly it's enough for a backup.

i personally use iCloud to take backup and transfer the data

There are of course online storage offerings that are best avoided, either due to their business models or history of poor governance. Among these I would count anything to do with Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Evernote, Dropbox and several others.

It's really easy to do that. You just need to make a backup file for your iPhone 5 with iTunes and then restore your iPhone 6s with the backup file with iTunes. You can also read this article to learn how to restore iPhone without iTunes here.
