Default External HDD for editing 4k video

    G'day Guys,

Similar to most people I am limited by my MBP 256GB ssd and I have a fair bit of video I need to off load and edit from a recent trip. Would like to look at a drive that is approx. 1tb. (And a second one as a backup).

Is anyone able to offer any advice re storage that is fast enough to handle editing using Final Cut Pro. The video is @ 1080 & 2.7k and would like to ensure it can handle in future 4k also.

    Thanks

    Matt

Have a look at one of these or similar:
Raid 0 over Thunderbolt 2 will definitely cover your 4K needs.

If you work with ProRes in FCP X it can devour 186+ gig per hour, add render files etc. and a 1 Terabyte Drive may start looking on the small side.
    Higher resolutions use even more.

I would look for a thunderbolt equiped device that you can swap the drives in. Load the files onto 1 disc, edit, render, create master file ect. Clone a copy of disc 1 to disc 2 if you want to keep a copy of the original files ect, or just make a copy of the master file. This assumes your thunderbolt device takes at least 2 drives.

You can try editing with proxy files if FCP X drops frames in playback

I have a thunderbolt Pegasus 4 bay drive each with 1 Tb on them. I've been looking to upgrade to a 6 bay one so happy to see if you're interested.
