Thread: Hardware check

    Default Hardware check

    Hi all,
I think my HDD is at the end of its life (7 yr old iMac!) but would like to check. I have tried booting with the D key depressed but can't get it to go into check mode. I have the HD backed up but would like to salvage things if I can. Any ideas

Try booting with the option key down, which should give you a list of available volumes and should include the Diagnostic partition.

OS X.6 or earlier with a DVD boot from it and run Repair Disk.

OS X.7 or later run Recovery Mode (Command + R) and in Utilities run the same.
