Default No updated iPod touch this yr?

Planning on getting and iPod touch for my oldest rather than passing on my tired 4s but don't want to do it if they get updated. At this stage it looks like they won't but what are people's thoughts? It's pretty much past the Xmas release time when they do this normally so figuring it's unlikely.

They're going to have to update them soon... the A5 is from March 2011... really starting to get long in the tooth. I feel they'll introduce a new one in about march next year? I doubt it would be before christmas though...

When you think about it, its worse than the iPod Touch 4th Gen. When the iPod Touch 4th gen was released, it had the latest chip and the as the then current iPad and iPhone. The iPod Touch 5 had the A5 which was already 1.5 years old. That being said, the A5 has aged far more gracefully. All the A5 devices ran iOS 7 pretty well, where as the iPad 1 didn't even get iOS 6 and the iPod touch 4 struggled with iOS 6.

I didn't realise the same chip has been kicking around so long. I don't know about others but find my 4S with the same processor struggles to run iOS8. Strange to still be selling a device that would also struggle to run it's shipped OS. Thinness aside and a fresher battery I'm wondering if I should just give my daughter my 4s when it retires soon and turn off the phone part. It's 64GB and the iPhone has a better camera.

I would give her the 4S, then replace it with an iPod Touhc when they finally release a new one. Its got the same internals as the iPod Touch 5 and would run iOS 8 the same. The A5 does struggle with iOS 8 mainly due to to poor optimisation. iOS 8.1.1 is apparently specifically aimed at improving iPad 2 and iPhone 4S performance so that could help. Apple are keeping both the A5 Mini and iPod touch 5 around for god knows what reason(I would assume cost cutting).

Only catch is that my phone belongs to my company so I'm unsure what amount it will come to. I would suggest around $100. Its battery isn't the best either.

Oh... Hmm. $100 wouldn't be bad for a 4S, because you'd probably be able to get most of it back later on. I think its just too much to pay for the iPod Touch 5 which is way past its use by date. I don't think Apple cares about the iPod Touch anymore.. I noticed on the iPod Touch page on the apple site, it still says it runs iOS 7 as a feature!!! They haven't been bothered to update that page :P

Yeah I noticed that too. Makes me wonder if they planned to update them earlier, but things got held up and noone noticed the page was out of date.

I don't know what the reason is. I wonder if the intend for the iPad Mini to replace it?

I forget where I read it, maybe MacRumours? "The iPod is nearing EOL. Apple expects us to use the iPhone as an iPod from here on."

isn't the latest the Mini itself is a chance to be killed off? I suspect the iPod Touch will stay but given its user base (majority children) it likely will be on the slow refresh line as it simply doesn't need the power. It mightt also be Apple are waiting to get the bottom end iPhone down further in price and that then can become the Touch with no Sim Card.

I'd hope not... the iPod touch is great for Teenagers and older children. They don't need iPhones, and honestly iPhones are way too expensive for that age range to have!

I'd argue that the iPod Touch does need the power, but at a slower rate than the other devices. they should update it every two years with the latest chip, not last years chip. The iPod Touch 5th gen would have been a much better proposition now if it had the A6 instead of the A5 it was given.

I doubt the mini is going to get killed off.... its such a stupid idea. I think Apple is unhappy about the sales on the retina mini (It apparently only reached 5% of the iPad market share or something), but I'd say this was because it was overpriced. The original mini managed to get a much larger market share.

I think the mini will get killed off in favour of the 6plus and maybe the 5 will become the new iPod touch.

Oh good. The Mini killed off by the 6+ which is too big to be a phone (In my opinion) and too small to be a tablet... The Mini is way too popular imho. If Apple gave it better specs and a lower price it would sell better.

Annoying nothing was done this year for me. It's looking like reusing my iPhone is the best option so far but it's battery is not so good.
