Default Telstra raising iPad data prices

Telstra is increasing the price of its 12 month iPad data package by 13%.

Here is an email I just received:

A change to our iPad 365-day recharge pricing
On 12 June, a 365-day recharge on the Telstra Pre-Paid micro-SIM for iPad will increase from $150 to $180.
At this new price, you’ll still receive12GB of included data – so you can enjoy great value surfing on Australia’s largest national mobile network.
Do you have a $150 monthly scheduled recharge?
If so, please remember to change the amount from $150 before 12 June. If you don’t change the amount, your recharge won’t automatically take place on the scheduled date. Please choose from our range of great Pre-Paid recharge options.
Be sure to maximise your value
You might also consider our other economical options on your next recharge. With a 30-day expiry, you can receive 12GB for $100, 9GB for $80, or 6GB for $60.
For more information, call 125 8887 or visit telstra.com/ipad

It's a good thing they're pointing out the fact that we're still receiving 12GB of data, lest we actually pay more for less.

Maybe they're doing the Vodafone thing, but instead of dumping advertising to pour money into their network, they're just simply raising prices.

Either way, people will most likely pay it anyway.

If they raise the price of their caps or reduce data allowances that's it.

I've had enough of them ripping apart bits of my contract - no more Wi-Fi data, 60 second block calls and these "difficulties" in capping mobile data.

To be fair, not like any of the others are better so we're screwed really.

The normal pre-paid data plan was $150 for 10gb, the iPad specific plan gave 12gb for that same price, so it looks like they've increased the pre-paid to $180 and added 2gb "compensation" and just made the iPad specific plan essentially the same.

I use the 12 month prepaid recharge for my iPad - I come nowhere near the data cap, but $150 for 12 months of Telstra 3G seems the most cost effective approach for my needs.

As my 12 month block actually expires on the 12 June, I've just gone and recharged for another $150, saved myself the $30 additional expenditure and continue to use my iPad on Telstra for another 12 months. According to Telstra, Ive used about $66 of my $150 allowance over the past 51 and a bit weeks - now, what the hell am I going to do with this $236 worth of credit...

What a laugh. That's at least $540 more than the yearly plan.

I'm glad I recharged just last week too.

    Default Bad News

I can't find an official list of plans. I always bought $20 for 30 days. Are they really scrapping that low end? I'll have to buy a $150 before it disappears.

Was passing by my local Telstra shop, asked them about this and they said they haven't even heard of it

    Default Not only that

They have changed the Data rate per Mb

    New plans

Pricing for standard use in Australia
    Recharge
Credit Data Rate per MB Data Allowance (Up To) Bonus Credit (Talk/Text) Expiry
    $20 8c 250MB $5 21 days
    $30 4.29c 700MB $7 30 days
    $40 3.91c 1GB $10
    $50 1.63c 3GB $10
    $80 1.95c 4GB $10 60 days
    $100 1.63c 6GB. $15 90 days
    $180. 1.46c 12GB $20 365 days

    Old plans

    $20 2.0c/MB 1GB 30 days
    $30 1.0c/MB 3GB 30 days
    $60 1.0c/MB 6GB 30 days
    $80 1.0c/MB 9GB 30 days
    $100. 1.0c/MB 12GB 30 days
    $150. 1.22c/MB 12GB 365 days

    Reamed!!!

BUT, if your quick, go up to your local post office, buy a $150 voucher, physically call them and demand the $150 deal, with the better rates,
they're still updating their system, and the online recharge systems are lagging, with it going into error when you try to buy the $150 rate, but they can do it manually!

Hopefully this discourages data use such that the network becomes a bit more stable. Unfortunately, it seems Telstra has become too competitive recently and their service has began to decline.

Oh look, it's gone back to the model of 2000 onwards to the GFC where Telstra charge more over time for things and give you less, it was only recently they stopped doing that and were competitive, guess all the nice new customers coming back from Vodas woes have made them smug and arrogant once again. The problem is that now their network sucks and they charge more for it. I was on 3. roaming on Telstra in Hobart last year and network speeds were fine. Two weeks ago in Hobart for work, my 4S struggled not to time out most of the time on Telstra. That was one of the places we moved to Telstra for and it was actually worse....can't win.

On June 11, I bought 12GB for $150 (365 days). Checked my balance and I had 7.7GB. I rang Telstra and all seems to be in order, but I still don't understand it. I believe my rate is 1.22c per megabyte. Why is my balance not 12GB? Very confused
