Default Android Phones in Australia by Christmas

Asher Moses has reported that Kogan will release an Android based mobile in Australia by Christmas

    Link

Will be interesting to see whether any of the networks pick it up, and whether it makes for more competition with the iPhone

It'll be like a $200 reminder of why you bought the iPhone in the first place.

Android has a few things I much prefer to iPhone's OS like multitasking - that draw thing where you can manage SMS', IMs etc.. is so much better than having disconnect/reconnect all the time with fring.

Kogan have just released a HD vid camera in the states for some ridiculous price (sub $500 from memory). They seem to be very keenly priced, although from my research they suffer a bit in the build quality areas.

Openmoko are about to release a phone based on Android as well:

    Openmoko info

The cool thing is that this phone will be truly hackable, where all the other Android phones will have some degree of closure in the hardware and software. Too bad its kind of ugly

When it comes to gadgets, we were never meant to be monogamous Or a word that sounds like that but is probably spelled differently...

Just doesn't tempt me. Its TOO open in my opinion. Any tom, dick and russian virus writer can put up an app. Sorry this will bre forever bug ridden

Apple have found it bad enough with their own software on their own hardware.

What realistic chance of a stable platform when its open software running on multiple hardware. No chance and no one can say anything to convince me.

Hopefully the platform itself will be secure enough (more so than say, windows..)

However you'll find there are alot more garbage/malware/adware/spyware/*ware apps out there..

    That's my prediction, anyway.

open doesn't mean crap. Common misconception. Just look at windows vs Linux.

An open source "design" (UI and user experience) will fail. Look at Linux.

I'll look at getting one. My iPhone already has to go in for repair for a dud right speaker, and I have to be careful where I put it, don't drop it etc. A $200 smartphone and I can treat it with a little less respect
