I want to install Windows XP SP2 on my Imac, making use of Bootcamp to switch between my OS 10.6 and Windows; I won't need to use Windows much, but, need it for eTax, now that I don't have a Windows laptop from my former employer anymore. What I need to know is whether or not the Windows install actually requires my Imac serial number during the installation process. My original system serial number was lost when the motherboard had to be replaced; now, the serial number is just "SystemSerialNumb", so, not a real serial number anymore. If successful Windows installation requires a serial number and encounters the one I've got, I'm concerned that the installation might fail, and then I will have paid for a copy of Windows that I can't use. I'd be grateful if anyone can tell me if a Windows install will work or not, with the "generic" system serial number for my machine.

Hi all,

I was hoping someone with an iPad could shed some light on this (this is part of the decision making process behind purchasing the device). I'm hoping for some real life experiences because from what I've read online it hasn't really been clear whether anything will be suitable for my purposes.

I have OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard), and what I'm looking for is a way I can do video chat to and from a "The new iPad"; for free.

From what I gather, FaceTime for Mac will not work because I do not have a new enough version. So that looks to be out of the equation.

I have seen some free apps like Vtok, but will this work? For example, could I video chat for free between the iPad and this Mac? How would it work? Is it completely free - ie. I see that the app is free but will I be hit with any hidden costs (call costs, in app purchases etc)... I don't want any surprises. If not Vtok, is there any other app that will do what I want? I'm unsure, from what I've read, whether Skype only costs money for calls to real phone numbers or if there are actually costs involved in an iPad <--> Mac video chat.

I have access to a Windows 7 PC, so if there is a free option that would work between an iPad and a Windows program that would be suitable as well.

Finally, how does push work with these iPad apps? If I start a video call to an iPad from a computer, will they get an alert in real time that I'm initiating a call? Or would the iPad have to initiate the call?

Thanks

Hi all

I've searched the threads but haven't been able to find this info and as a current non Mac user I 'm hoping I can get some advice which will help.

My daughter currently has a MacBook White 5.2 - this is the spec, with 160GB drive - MacBook (13-inch, Early 2009) - Technical Specifications
She has been saving up and is now looking at buying a refurbished MacBook Air as a replacement - Refurbished MacBook Air 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - Apple Store (Australia)

She mainly uses the Mac at home and I just want to be sure its worth her while doing the change. If she doesn't gain a lot is she better off continuing to save and going for a different model in a few months time? her main concern is the inability to use the latest OS so I'll search the threads for some info on this as well but if there is a sticky that covers it appreciate if someone can point it out. Appreciate any advice as I just wnat to make sure she spends well and whatever she decides will do her for a while,

Cheers

Hi everyone,

I have Photo Stream activated on my iPhone and 2 Apple TVs (Gen 2 and Gen 3). There are some strange things happening with it all.

When I take a photo with my iPhone, it works as expected ... the photo gets copied to my camera roll on the iPhone and is uploaded to the Cloud and then it also appears on my Apple TVs when in WiFi range. However, I have photos appearing in my Photo Stream on my iPhone which were taken late last year. I thought photos automatically dropped off the stream after 30 days. Why are they not dropping off? There are currently 218 photos in the camera stream on my iPhone. These same photos appear on my Apple TV Gen2 but not Gen3.

On my Apple TV Gen3, only the last 14 photos have appeared. Thinking about it, they are probably the only photos which have been taken in the last 30 days. So it may be working correctly. It will be interesting to see what happens after the 30 day limit.

Can anyone suggest a reason why the older photos are not dropping off the Photo Stream on my iPhone and Apple TV Gen2. I have tried logging out and logging in again.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me.

Dan

Hi Everyone,

Please excuse my ignorance but I am a new iMac user and have searched this topic to no avail.

I just purchased an i5 iMac from an international student. He has since left and I have realised I cannot access many applications etc due to passwords and initial set up.

I would like to restore the computer to factory settings and start afresh. It is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 but I do not have the original disk, can I do a restore without a disk? Or does anyone in the Brisbane/Bulimba area have one? Once restored I will likely upgrade it to Lion or Mountain Lion when available.

To make things even more challenging, there are a few programs (Microsoft Office, some apps, etc) that I would like to keep. Any chance of recovering the licenses for these prior to restoring? Also, there are loads of music and movies that would be great to keep as well if possible but I do not know how. (I do have a 1TB HD to use if necessary)

My apologies if this is redundant information, or if I am pushing the boundaries for an inquiry.

Thank you.

Back in the day...

There was once a dearth of Mac games for the early iMacs such as the iMac DV. Sure there are always games but not mega games. So we were served well by Blizzard North. Not just a port, Diablo II really fit the iMac. And it ran well too, something you can't really attribute to your typical port.

In terms of massive games, Diablo II was massive, breaking sales records all over the place. And we were right amongst it.

And so we waited for a sequel. We got an expansion pack after a while and it was incredible. But the sequel? Well, we waited and waited. And waited.

So I just can't avoid this indulgence. I gotta shout it from the top. The sequel, Diablo III, is upon us! Come 5pm tomorrow (pre-purchased boxes allowed from 9am in game stores) the servers will go live and I'll be in there swinging my sword!

A decade is a long time to wait. I am really overjoyed.

...well, according to Claire Connelly at the esteemed news.com.au site:
Apple founder Steve Wozniak said Microsoft was to blame for Macintosh's problems | Information, Gadgets, Mobile Phones News & Reviews | News.com.au

If the misleading headline is correct, I think Woz has been drinking the kool aid (to steal a dodgy US cliché). OS 8 and 9 sucked because of constant memory leaks, programs running out of memory, and Apple having to mod what was a single-tasking OS with so much trickery to stay modern. There was a pretty good reason they bought NeXT (or almost BeOS) ;)

Anyone here born before 1985 would be well versed in hitting Command-I and altering memory allocation in OS 8/9. Photoshop was notorious for it!

And Woz, IE sucked on both Windows and Mac in the 90s.

Hello,

I am trying to recover files from a bitmap-corrupted disk and some files are just plain rubbish and take forever to copy. I would like to use some kind of "timeout" to cancel the copy operation after a certain amount of time.
As far as I am now is using AppleScript:

Code:

--while iterating through the files
try
        with timeout of 15 seconds
                tell application "Finder"
                        duplicate this_file to target_folder
                end tell
        end timeout
on error
        return 0
end try

The problem is that after 15 seconds, the copy operation in Finder won't stop, it will just pause the script, which is the correct behaviour of the with timeout command (but not the one I need).

The only thread I could find about this topic was here and the intervention was rather useless...

Any ideas? You don't have to use AppleScript, any solution is welcome!

I have a friend who is in the process of moving from a Macbook to a Windows laptop (I know, I know, don't shoot the messenger, lol).

We have been trying to copy her entire home folder onto an external hard drive and finding that it dies partway through the copy, stating that the destination folder is already there. We delete the destination folder before starting the copy. So it's like it starts to copy it then decides that the whole copy is a duplicate but doesn't realise that it itself is making the copy, if that makes sense.

The external hard drive is in FAT32 format, which I think might be the problem, some permission-y thing, or file size issue or something?

Also, am I right in saying that the best way to preserve her iPhoto event categorisations would be to open the iPhoto database file on the Mac, using "Show Package Contents" and then copy all the folders within, to the external?
