• Is there a new Apple store coming to Melbourne to be located in South Melbourne?

Information on the Apple job website leads us to believe there may be. A quick search of the Apple site revealed this little titbit of information. Of course, working in the city and living in Port Melbourne makes this good news for me and being selfish, I don't really care about anyone else. At long last an Apple store close to the city! The big question now is where in South Melbourne they intend to put it and when it will be opening its doors?

YES! close enough to the CBD, but better still it's closer to home!

don't have to travel all the way to Chaddy.

Very interesting. Looking at the boundaries of 3205 (at Post Code Look-up & Demographic Profiles | Free Service) it looks like Clarendon St would be the likely candidate - Kings Way and Bridport St are other possibilities but seem unlikely.

Though the downside is that this now makes a CBD store seem very unlikely indeed.

South Melb is a big Mac/Apple area. Lots of design houses, video production and yuppies. Would make total sense. Would also totally cut Comp Now's lunch...

Agree. Location is great and makes lots of sense. Parking is less of an issue than the city and its close enough to the city for public transport.

It's also a very handy location for people like me who are from Geelong and would never see a local Apple store in their lifetime!!!

      YES FRICKEN PLEASE.

Disclaimer, I live in Sth Melb so it would be oh so convenient to me.

I don't think it would make the CBD store less likely, just perhaps them taking the opportunity on available real estate. I honestly believe that Apple want a CBD store ASAP (why wouldn't they?), just cant get the correct building/street frontage.

It wouldn't make sense to have two stores within 5km of each other, and Apple Stores can't be cheap for Apple to set up so this would be an expensive temporary measure if that's what's going on. Maybe Apple have concluded that there won't be appropriate space in the CBD anywhere in the next couple of years.

The only place I can think of is Chaple street inside the Jam Factory.

i got a mate working at the real estate agency, and Apple has assigned his agency to seek a suitable location in the Melbourne CBD. it wasn't his assignment, but assigned to a separate team in his agency. apparently, they were looking at a few properties along Bourke St and Lonsdale St. however, things didn't go to well with price negotiations with property owners, and Apple just threw in the towel in Q3 2010. since then, Apple may have sought for other alternatives.

The only thing that makes me weary of this is the fact its April 1st.

      If its true then bonus.

There is an area with great street frontage to Clarendon St in the new Hotel that is basically empty. I doubt it would however have the space needed. However that part of town is the center of the tourist-convention area.

There is also an issue of being perceived to be associated with the complex via location. Maybe this isn't an issue for Apple.

does half of mactalk live in south melb - me too.

crown ... upmarket fashion brands / lots of tourists / open all hours ... fits apple's retail aims.

Clarendon St retail does not fit .... yes lots of creative companies in south melb but they would be quite happy with their current resellers ... apple goes where they can grow the market and talk to mass demographics

I thought of Crown straight away. The store front in the building on Clarendon St (interesting directly opposite Computers Now) is big enough for an Apple Store

The commercial space has a huge street frontage but is very very shallow for a lot of it. I suspect this is why there has been no permanent tenant as yet, well not one prepared to do an expensive fit out. I suspect most of the floor in the building is used for the Hotel. Interestingly the Hotel has totally ignored Clarendon street and opens only into the internal courtyard.

If the space was there, would be a perfect spot for it, unless you work for computers Now.

What about South Wharf? Plenty of parking although I'm not sure it classifies as South Melbourne.

The good guys just closed their store there so it may have been for an Apple store.

The whole South Wharf could become the first Apple Mall!

I thought Apple were going into the new Myer Centre in the city? Though i am probably wrong.

South Melbourne seems like an odd choice. I would have thought Chapel st would have been a more obvious move.
