So, I keep reading that online orders of the iPad 2 will open at 1am...but it is unclear whether it's 1am AEST or 1am AEDST?

Also - it's anyone's guess how long it'll take to dispatch right? Unlikely to be delivered on Friday... and certainly not over the weekend.

It concerns me a little that the Apple online store hasn't been updated yet.

it will be 1 am Sydney time, which is AEDST because the official press release is published in Sydney.

the store will be updated at about 1 am, not prior to date.

It'll be 1-2 weeks probably. It took US 1 week, we'll be slower, I'd say.

Dagnabbit - I think I'll just take my chances hopping from retailer to retailer after work tomorrow and see where that takes me. If I have to wait regardless, ordering it online tomorrow evening won't make much of a difference.

Somehow I doubt that it will be a 2-3 week wait for stock. Apple seem to be smart enough to allow enough units to cover both online and physical sales, and would be a bit silly to throw everything at the retail stores and fuck over those choosing to buy online. Then again I've been wrong in my predictions before :D

I'll probably get one from the USA like I originally tried to do and cancel this order. Yeah I believe they charge just before they ship. I mean, I don't mind a cover, but I would probably prefer the iPad came a little quicker ha! Online store still estimates 2-3 weeks for shipping for all new purchases, this leads me to believe that those of us that got in early may see some changes in estimated shipping etc today sometime. It can't possibly be 2-3 weeks for everyone, including those ordering this morning/today.

That's not usually cause for panic. A shipping notification from a supplier like Apple's end means it's been picked, packed and assigned a tracking number ready for imminent pickup. There's frequently a delay until it gets scanned into the transport company's system and registers an activity.

I heard from someone who knows someone at Apple, and was told that despite the ship in 2-3 weeks statement that on-line orders which were lodged early (before 9am) would see the iPads shipped to them next week.

I personally don't believe it, and will only believe it when the TNT guy rings my doorbell with my iPad2.

I was thinking that myself (perhaps optimistically). Instead of putting up a 2-3 days ship time and then quickly changing it as the orders came in. It'll be easier to peg it as 2-3 weeks and ship first in first out. Will also prevent them from having to deal with complaints eg. " I placed my order 5 minutes after my friend but why is his ship time 4-5 days and mine 2-3 weeks". Easier to under-promise and over-deliver is my opinion.

Just a thought....could it be that Apple have used a 2-3 week default to ensure a good turn-out on the night of the release at their stores (rather than everyone buying online if available by early next week). I guess we'll find out next week!

They have done exactly that. There's no reason why their online distributor couldn't have gotten stock at the same time or before the retail distributors. That's what I don't like about them .... herding people to suit their marketing/publicity goals.

The 2-3 weeks shipping time is there to cover Apple's ass if they get overwhelmed by orders. I'm hoping for an earlier shipping time, but in the US the shipping times blew out from 2-3 weeks at launch to 3-4 weeks and are only now pulling back to the 2-3 week wait. I don't think it's a ploy by Apple to increase lines - they don't need to generate any hype about that and it could well be counter-productive if you get long lines but not enough iPads to meet demand at the stores (as happened in the US). I just saw there's around 100 people lined up at Perth Store with more than 8 hours to go before they're available.

So did the US online store originally default to 2-3 weeks as well at launch? From memory people started receiving them within a couple of days.

Oh.. by the way.. ordered mine when it said 2-3 week wait. Just received my order ack email, it will deliver on 21st April which is 4 weeks away (wtf its not even 1am yet!!).

They say "ships in 2-3 weeks" from the factory in China but they allow an additional 5-6 days for delivery. From my experience in reality it takes only 2-3 days from when it says it's left the factory. Clearly some people (those that ordered early) will get theirs a lot before 15th or 21st April if so many people are getting that as their shipment/delivery dates.

I'm with CBA. Maybe it works differently because mine's a debit card and there's no 'credit' associated with it at all like most of you guys - i.e. they have to check to make sure I'm good for it, whereas with a credit card, they just let you withdraw as much as you like because it's in their best interests that you go broke because then they sell the debt off.

With ipad 1 they did an authorisation the moment I ordered. This stayed against my credit card for a couple of weeks but remember there was three or four weeks between ordering an delivery, well the authorisation cleared off well before delivery. Then two days after delivery the full amount was debited properly.

I'd imagine this will work pretty much the same unless they've changed their processes.

If you are using a debit card, you should ensure you have the correct amount in your account (not just when you ordered) otherwise you could jeopardise your delivery. That happened quite a bit if I recall last time round.

They have moved a lot of operations into regional centres, rather than how it used to be (Apple Aus, Apple S'Pore, Apple HK, etc) over the past 6-12 months. How can they send stock to stores when they have pre sold orders waiting to be filled from on line sales.
Initially I had the exact same reaction. I felt miffed that if they had stock sitting around or constantly shipping in that they could keep delivering to stores, why couldn't they send one out to me? Then when the early excitement and hype died down I thought about it a little more and my attitude changed. Everyone knew this was going to be big, from news online & offline, from what the situation was like in America etc. Apple has planned their distribution and sales strategy as they see fit; that's what companies do everywhere on a daily basis. Bottom line: this is just another product being sold to regular consumers. For online sales it was written up front in plain English for everyone to see before placing an order: "Ships: 2-3 weeks". If that's the option we chose and are sticking with then we have to accept it. If the delivery dates slip past that for the initial online buyers (and I'm one of them) then we might have cause to whinge about it. :p

Others have said, "Well what about people in [remote areas etc.] who have no other option!" It might be disappointing, but Apple has no obligation to provide a solution for getting iPads to everyone everywhere, either at the launch or at any time thereafter.

(they even have our money)
Your bank/card may operate differently, but they don't have my money yet. My credit card only has a "purchase authorisation" value listed on it. It's how they check that the account exists and has enough funds or credit available to support the transaction. It usually vanishes in a few days or a week and eventually the final charge shows up when the order ships.

(As a side note this came in very handy recently after some unknown charges appeared on my card. Because I caught them in the early authorisation-only stage I could cancel the card and stop them immediately, avoiding the dispute process later to fight for my money back.)

I'll call them on Monday to get an explanation.
So they told you it would be 2-3 weeks and you're going to bug them after 2-3 days asking why you can't have it now?

It will be really interesting to see how this pans out.

When you cancel your order you have to tell them why you want to do it, and select from a range of options. I just said that delivery will take too long. I hope enough people do that so that they will get the hint to organise things a bit better next time around.

Has anyone else ordered a blue leather smart cover? I did at 12.55am on day of launch and unlike many others who appear to have ordered different colours and shipping confirmation already, my shipping date is still the 15th April. Just wondering if there is a back order on blue leather.

I ordered navy blue leather and it'll be in my hands by monday. I'll have a great time playing with it without my iPad.

So they told you it would be 2-3 weeks and you're going to bug them after 2-3 days asking why you can't have it now?

Big difference with the USA launch and ours is that they actually had stock ready to ship at the time they went online. Sure it sold out quickly but Apple Australia didn't have any to start with. It was 2 - 3 weeks from the get go. They didn't say anywhere they were taking pre orders, they launched online sales! It actually didn't even have pricing until they launched. I bought one anyway hoping it was a mistake and the fact I did it all within 5 seconds of it going live only to read the shipping time once I got the job done.

Now if only I had done the same when they launched in the USA but I wasn't expecting it to be so hard. 3 weeks later still no iPad.

I'll probably cancel if I can get one earlier. My blue poly cover has shipped though and will arrive on Monday.

I heard of a mate getting one at DSE so I'll try other resellers/JB/Myer etc later. Probably will get it before Apple ships it out. Shame since I ordered ASAP.

Actually, they did release the prices a day or so before when they announced the sale would be going ahead on Friday. Also, as someone else mentioned, it started with 2-3 weeks shipping, if you're not happy about that then don't order from there, easy as that. You're not obliged to order from there and they are not obliged to make everything fair. The US is a bigger market and that has been given priority - nothing we can do.

BIG difference between the USA and ours? Yes, of course. BIG difference in population size too. They have to make it available online immediately, otherwise American Apple Retail Stores will not be able to cope with the crowd as it is. Here in Australia, much less people. So, they rather you queue at brick and mortar stores for publicity. if it's available online immediately, there'll be less queue in the stores.

Yes, they didn't say anywhere they're taking preorders, because they didn't promised, aren't obliged and didn't intend to.

And you're just less informed than others. Pricing was announced on the early mornings of Wednesday 23 March for the Friday 25 March launch.

And in summary, the time estimates Apple quotes are mostly conservative, but fairly accurate. If you're fortunate, it'll be less than that time. For example, Smart Covers are arriving at people's door steps from Monday 28 March, although it states 2-3 weeks. But, in 99.99% of the time, it'll take no longer than the quoted time frame.

Last but not least, I'm perplexed by the number of people who post in Mactalk (from they're low post count), or make the debut post, just to whine.

Yeah, I've got to say I'm amazed by how entitled some people get about this.

I put in my order when it went live and the 23 week wait was plain to see before I made any commitment. How's that a problem? It's not like Apple's manufacturing chain is sitting back and scratching its arse. Apple wants the sale as much as you want the delivery.

Anyway, experience shows that Apple underpromises and overdelivers, so the chance of every ipad being dispatched well within that timeframe is high. Chin up.

My covers had been shipped, but AV adapter and iPad were showing ship dates of 15 April. But now my AV adapter (while still showing the same ship date) has moved to "Prepared for shipment". Presumably that means it will soon be shipped, well ahead of the stated ship date, so hopefully there's a chance the same will happen to the iPad!

While it's certainly true that if a 2-3 week wait is shown it's reasonable to expect a 2-3 week wait for an iPad2, look at it from another angle.

Us fanbois might certainly accept it, but the average bloke in the street who is buying an Apple product for the first time would see it differently. "Retail store customers get first dibs, but I have to wait until late April to get mine? If that's how they're going to treat me for buying online, I can go without. Fuck Apple! *cancel order*"

It's not a good impression for the average punter.

You obviously don't shop online much, online shoppers are a different breed to those that enjoy shopping in the real world, they are usually time poor or just too lazy to actually get into a car, drive somewhere, queue up or needing it asap, Amazon and eBay buyers are used to it... waiting is the name of the game for shopping online, and they would not mind as long as it get's delivered safely to their front door, also they sometimes don't mind paying extra for shipping even since they pay for convenience... the moral, if you can't be bothered or can't make it to a store, suck it up and do somethings else in the meantime :p

Nope, quite the opposite. I choose online shopping wherever possible because I am lazy AND also time poor :D

I'm not complaining about the potential long wait for an Ipad 2. I'm happy to wait, but if I can get one retail before delivery, I'll do that.

What I am saying is that if delivery estimates are indeed accurate, it's poor form for Apple to keep supplying retail outlets over those waiting for online orders to be delivered.

Apple makes more profit selling them in-store than online once you take into account the shipping cost. Of course the physical store has rental and staffing cost, but these are relatively fixed cost all year round. So by selling them in-store they earn more money.

If there are only "X" amount of stock in the country, as someone said they need to have enough to supply to the physical stores to keep the hype going, why would they give you the preference if you are not really part of that hype?

Looks like all Apple stores and the resellers have sold out ipad2...they are are now waiting for the second batch of shipment, just like we are. I guess Apple decided not to allocate any ipad2 to online store from the first batch of stock. That's why they announced 2-3 weeks shipping time from the very beginning of the online sale.

Hope I am wrong and we receive our ipad2 sometime this week...
