View Full Version : Looking to do the Pc to mac switch - some questions.

hey Guys,

Looking at purchasing 4 x imac 27" and questions may have already been answered so i apologize for my lazyness. Some of these questions may be answered by going into a mac store but i don't want the sales pitch as well. So again thanks for any advice. These are basic questions, but need to be answered:

1. How does the file system work? is it the same as a pc or similar where you have the main C: so to speak and then user files / folders under C:/users/Documents and settings/ etc?

2. Are primary devices plug and play?

3. how is the security on the device out of the box. Are there a good open source list of software for this kind of thing?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge. We have had pc's forever even up till windows 7 with many issues and have had recommendations to go mac.

Firstly, Welcome :)

Secondly, some more questions you may have can be answered here http://www.mactalk.com.au/14/36913-switchers-faq.html

1. It's a UNIX style presentation. Everything is under the root folder / Applications are /Applications removable media is in /Volumes. Windows is actually rather odd in that it uses drive letters (in terms of how many OS's use drive letters)

2. Not sure what you mean. External hard drives, printers, scanners etc are plug and play. I'm sure there is some device out there that needs arcane methods to get working but it would be rare

3. Pretty good. Depends what you mean by secure. Viruses, malware etc haven't been an issue thus far. The OS itself can be as secure or as open as you want it to though. For software check out the Mac App store (http://www.apple.com/mac/app-store/). You can get virus scanners and whatnot but they tend to only scan for windows viruses and malware that may come your way (they won't infect OS X but you may inadvertently pass them on to someone else).

Although Mac Malware/Virus's is essentially non existent, I still have the freeware iAntivirus scan on my machines for peace of mind.
