View Full Version : Printer Sharing: Printing in Snow Leopard on a Shared Win7 Printer

5th October 2010, 06:49 PM
As the topic above states, I am having trouble connecting to a shared printer on my network.

I currently have a MacBook Pro 17" running snow lepoard, and a Compaq HP Desktop running on Windows 7 Ultimate with a shared canon printer.

The sharing is all set up on the windows PC, but I have no idea how to add my shared printer to my Macbook

I have experimented, and googled but am unable to find a solution. :o

I am hoping that someone here on this forum may be able to help me.

I thankyou in advance for any assistance you can give me.

Kev ;)

So what have you tried on the Mac?

What app are you trying to print from?

Try opening TextEdit (from your Applications Folder), type "TEST" and then select print. It will then ask you for a printer, so then look for your printer on your network. Alternatively, type in the printer name e.g. \\study-pc\hp deskjet 948c - that is \\computer name\printer name

I have tried printing from firefox and MS Office.

I select print, then when the printer options come up, I select add printer as there are no printers available.
Under the windows tab, there is nothing to select and all the options are greyed out.

So I tried going to the IP tab and entering the IP of my Windows PC.
But when trying to print, the printer settings tab crashes and hangs, and I end up having to force quit the app.

What do I need to do to be able to see my printer in the printer settings?

After googling, I figured out I needed to customize the toolbar to get the advanced printer settings, which I have done.

I then entered the details as in the pic below

I tried to put my pc name and printer name, instead of IP address but it greys out the following options. Same thing happens if I try my IP address followed a slash then my printer name

Tried printing with the settings above but it still did not work :(

Here's a link to an article that may help - Add a Mac to your Windows Network (http://www.cnet.com.au/diy-add-a-mac-to-your-windows-network-240056544.htm)

Still unable to get this working :(
Here are my current settings
I try to print, and my macs printer manager says printing, but it does not print.
After a short while the print job is paused.
I resume it, and still nothing. Tried pressing resume on the printer also and that doesn't fix it.
Anybody know whats wrong?

It isn't my printer or printer sharing settings because I can sucessfully print to it from another windows 7 laptop on my wifi network.
