All great news. Can't wait to try new Apple TV. iOS 4.2 for iPad will be awesome, can't wait. And that Nano, wow.
Not sure where they were headed with the new iTunes icon, though. Yuck!

Do I really have to go to my computer to download a movie to watch on my AppleTV? I love the current ATV where I don't have to get off the couch to select and download a movie to watch. Bummer!

Very pleased to see a new 64GB iPod Touch for A$499 but slightly disappointed that it still looks like the current model i.e. no iPhone 4 style update but will definitely upgrade my current iPod Touch Gen 2 32GB. Might even look at the new Apple TV for A$129 to do a bit of streaming. Thanks Anthony for the summary and I'll watch the keynote when I get home from work.

Updated iTunes UI looks pretty good.

Ping sounds really good on paper.

Can't wait for the barrage of awesome HDR photos </sarcasm>

New iTunes logo is wack. So are the vertical X + buttons. And the coloured icons down the sidebar in iTunes helped you get to something quickly without reading.

New nano looks pretty sweet. Now that it has an FM radio, think we'll get that in future iPhone's? There is actually an FM radio in the iPhone isn't there? Just not active?

Not what I was hoping for with the Apple TV. But most of my gripes come down to content. Would love it if we got the Netflix integration.

Yes, just saw that :(

As for the Apple TV. I have two of the older ones, both used for 100% streaming... only thing is they are hacked so I can stream content in other formats from a NAS, looks like the update doesn't actually bring anything to the table for me...

Was interested to hear HDR bracketing coming the the iPhone and iPad. Wonder if apple will bring a HDR plug in for aperture? Be interesting to see how it's implemented. The new look apple tv is a winner for me. I would buy tomorrow if in stock. Says September as delivery date so hope in the next week. Really excited for 4.1 hitting iPad in November. Nano looks nice but I don't know if I'll have a use for one. Touch looks nice but I'm getting a iPhone 4 soon so. iTunes 10 sounds good.

I'm looking at the Apple TV and my mind is cast back to somewhere in the distant past, say 2005, when someone famous declared it the year of HD.
Since then Apple have stubbornly refused to realise that HD came and is now surpassed and we now have full HD. What's going on?
The iPod touch looks like a very useful gadget. Does this mean when I travel I can now have a face to face talk with family via wi-fi? (I don't have an iPhone).

Anyone having any luck with Downloading the available "NOW" iTunes 10.

Mmmmmmm not so available "NOW" me thinks. Looking forward to it. Obviously as all the blogs have listed it as NOW, Anthony/MTAU is just quoting them.

So glad they didn't kill off the classic.

Regarding the Game Center. Can you register a name other than your iTunes account? I have all my social network stuff under Scar68 and want to be able to do the same with this. Not so keen on putting out my iTunes account name.

Apple TV is pretty meh for my needs, the new nano looks cool but like all buttonless things it could be a bit awkward to use.

New shuffle is cool, they always amaze me. It's a bit sad Steve doesn't even class the classic as an iPod anymore :p

Well I don't need the Apple TV now as I have a 360 & PS3, though I think I will consider getting one for my parents at Christmas time. Would be ideal if you could view ABC iView or that Channel 7 one that seems to come and go from my PS3.

no...no reason to.

AppleTV is basically front row with some iTMS functionality built in. Everything on it can be done with the remote although it would be really handy if they allowed bluetooth keyboard integration for typing searches in and whatnot.

I'm sure it is if you know how it works but as Steve mentioned, Apple's research indicated that consumers don't want a computer on their TV and IT/Computer enthusiasts don't seem to understand that.

I have an Apple TV and I'd have to say it's only ever used for streaming content from my iMac despite the fact I can buy stuff using it and store it on the device. The New AppleTV looks like a perfect addition to the TV's in the bedroom and rumpus room.

The New AppleTV is basically an updated airport express with video out....looks good and I'll be getting two.

It was available for a little while. I went to the download page earlier this morning, but there was an error on the page. I tried reloading the page a few times and then the, 'coming soon,' page turned up. Sounds like there are some server or some other issues.

Quamen
2nd September 2010, 09:57 AM
They turned the Apple TV into a souped up airport express. Completely useless. I bought one so that I didn't have to have my computer on to watch movies and listen to music. Guess I'll be replacing my Apple TV with a Mac Mini Server when it dies.

I'm happy they put buttons back on the shuffle, much better. The voice controlled one was crap. At least I know I can replace my old shuffle with something useful when it dies.

New iPod Touch is a nice upgrade, I can see them selling heaps of these.

iPod Nano they will probably sell a lot of, but it's not for me.

I have had an Apple TV since they were released (40gb HDD) and see no reason to get a new one if it doesn't have a USB port. At the moment I have a external hard drive plugged into it and whenever I download new shows I just unplug external, sync it with computer and plug it back in.

I got tired of re-encoding video all the time to play on ATV but if current one dies then I may have to but hopefully not soon.

It makes it cheaper and the menu arrangement is optimised for streaming content. To stream from your computer, you have to go into the Computers menu. From there, you would branch out to movies, TV shows, etc.

I use my Apple TV heavily for movies but moreso TV shows. Every day I sync a number of episodes to the Apple TV, watch them, and they are replaced. This syncing doesn't make a lot of sense, if I think about it, because the content is not there for long. I think the new Apple TV will be good for that.

Movies are a different matter. My computer would have to stream for 1 1/2 to 3 hours for a movie, and it's a bitch to sync them because they are so big. I think it makes more sense to store movies locally. To this end, I'm considering devoting my old Apple TV purely to movies and the new one to everything else.

if you check out the video on engadget it shows you can basically use it as a watch so that when you press the wake button it goes straight into clock. One thing with the nano is you were able to change songs without looking at the device but not you have to pick it up and watch where you touch.

Interesting to see people wanted the buttons back on the shuffle

Even more interesting that Apple back-flipped and brought them back! I think it's a sign of maturity that they can recognise their mistakes, admit to them and fix things.

Overall they seem to be positioning themselves pretty well with this lineup. 16 Gb in a wearable clip-on player is pretty cool. The only thing I think it's missing is a GPS for route tracking. It's pretty uncomfortable and inconvenient to run with an iPhone or iPod touch strapped to you. I'd gladly exchange FM radio for a GPS receiver. You could even get it to display your pace and distance from start and to destination on the screen. I don't think Nike+ would be near as accurate since it's basically just a pedometer.

How long till we see a new thread with a poll to see what people are going to buy do you think? :p;)

Am tempted to upgrade my iPod touch though!
I have a work iPhone and personal iPhone - but still use my original 16GB iPod touch on planes - as I travel so much for work, and like to use the iPod so that when I arrive I still have charged iPhones.

Although with iPad, 2 x iPhones, and an old iPod touch is sort of hard to justify... lucky I have a personal policy NOT to ever try and justify electronic toys and gadgets eh?!?!!

Imagine if the ipod was originally released without MP3 compatibility. That is what they essentially are doing by releasing ATV with limited codecs.

Give it full codecs and get the hardware out there FFS. The studios are too boneheaded to lead a market. Apple should leverage the 'pirate' market to create a legitimate market like the ipod did to music.

I agree but Apple won't do that as then no studios would sign up with them for paid content thus killing off a revenue stream.

If I didn't already have a ATV I would get one and hack it to use external HDD rather than streaming anyway.

iTunes 10's grid view scrolling it a lot smoother now. The vertical traffic lights are a pretty weird decision, but I think it looks and works pretty well. I rarely use anything but the close button anyway.

I'm most weirded out by the greyscale icons everywhere. And the icon is going to take some getting used to.

The thing is there wont ever be a revenue stream until buttloads of ATVs are in peoples homes. But there wont be loads sold if theres limited content. Apple shouldnt be fussed about getting content deals yet. Its too immature a market.

They are trying to put the cart and horse together. Which leaves them with a half-arsed horse and a wobbly cart. Where as with the ipod they got the horse out there first and 2+ years later they attached the cart. Then the music studios started seeing the possibilities purely because there were enough devices out there to see a viable market.

I dont see the threat to studios in putting a full suite of codecs on it given i can already buy a WD TV (and god knows how many others) at the local shop that will stream virtually any file.

The music studios have been getting my money for the last 4 or so years now and its only because Apple dragged them kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.

There seems to be a much smaller, pill-shaped patch very high on the back. That could be it. The back also seems to be a single piece with a rim around it, not dissimilar to the iPhone 4 in concept. Does it have a plastic antenna cover or a round-the-edge antenna?

I believe the pill-shaped thing is the sleep/ wake button which is on the other side to the previous iPod touch models, it could have a little rim around the edge of it which could also be the antenna. Only time will tell, I have one ordered.

The new iPod Nano looks good. Seeing it is possibly a version of iOS, will the jailbreaking community start modifying it?

If it could be jailbroken to:
- play videos (small screen I know, but I could put up with it)
- holding down the volume buttons (as opposed to a single press) acted as skip forward/back function for songs

Then I'd definitely think about getting one...

For the video - if the capability is there then why not? Of course video wasn't included for a reason, but that doesn't mean there wouldn't be an occasion when it might be handy.

For the volume buttons doubling as skip buttons - that is a no-brainer. You don't have to take your eyes off the road to go to a new song, voice control doesn't work in this situation.

AppleTV is basically front row with some iTMS functionality built in. Everything on it can be done with the remote although it would be really handy if they allowed bluetooth keyboard integration for typing searches in and whatnot.

Thanks for the reply!

Not to worry, just another remote for the coffee table. I was hoping to use the magic trackpad with it to save the extra item, but not fussed, the magic track pad will still be used for the old set up that uses VLC to play files iTunes doesn't support (easily).

For what it's worth, the Remote app for the iPhone and iPod touch will soon be updated to allow you to control the Apple TV. Being able to use the on-screen keyboard and swipe gestures seems like a win to me.

Nano, very cool however they removed video support and game support. So it really is a downgrade when all said and done. If it had a calendar and an alarm I would buy it just as a watch face. Dick Tracy style :)

720p is the same as the last one. Was really hoping they would run it to 1080p. Maybe it can be software updatable but who knows. For $129 it will work perfectly fine on my smaller tv in the bedroom which is only 768 lines anyway.

My main tv is not full HD anyway, so the 720p is ok, though I too am surprised they've not gone up to full HD. Is content in the US more geared toward 720p "HD", or - is 1920x1080 too heavy to handle for the wireless connectivity maybe?

I think the problem is the increased overhead required on the server-side to provide 1080 content. More importantly average home broadband speeds would create a bottleneck streaming 1080, at least in the US.

Hmmm, since the new aTV wont be sync-able, there is an option to tell it which pictures to "stream" in the settings now..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/devilrolla12345/f54969e6.pngSo the old ATV could also access iPhoto libraries?
Whilst I have considered the old ATV hacked as a possible device to add to the TV, I think the entry price of the new ATV is much more palatable for a locked down machine.

I miss colour!! Not a fan of the grey, I do hope they change that...not sure why they'd go with this all grey look to begin with. I do like the new hybrid view though. Agreed. There is already such little colour in Mac apps that this just looks too minimalist and one has to pay a little closer attention to which icon one is selecting instead of going by colour.

EDIT: The rumours and mock-ups were all pretty much in line with what was revealed this time, and also with the iPhone and trackpad. Is there any point left to Apples' secrecy with their products? Everyone seems to have just about as much clue as they do.

For God's sake. How would you compare this special music event to, for instance, the one where Apple first launched the Nano in 2005? I seem to recall in that event Apple launched the first Nano, demoed the Motorola ROKR (top piece of kit there) and launched iTunes 5 (now with parental controls!!!).

I don't want to sound like a cranky old man y'know, "you kids don't know how bad it was back in the old days" but there is no comparison between this event and that one.

There's now an almost reflex "meh" reaction to whatever Apple launches these days but by witnessing Apple revamp almost their entire iPod range (now also vastly expanded), launch a version of iTunes that has the potential to keep MySpace awake at nights, as well as revamp a product that a twinkle in Steve's eye in 2005, you can see how far this company has progressed.

Seriously. Get a grip.

Having seen photos of the Nano and shuffle side by side, a possible way to keep button mashers happy is to have the ability to lock/sync/join the two together and the click wheel on the shuffle can control the Nano.

That way you don'y have to use the touchscreen if you don't want to....expensive way to do it, but an option.

Very true. I was curious by the new products, but... meh kinda summed it up for me. Not because the products aren't interesting and potentially exciting... but

The nano basically uses the touch panel that we saw leaked a lil while back, and - we even had someone here post a mock up of...

It's tough. We come to this site and whether intending to or not, learn about the rumours of what may be coming out of Apple in the future... and when the future arrives, it's all a bit meh.

I'd imagine we might see the iPad with a facetime camera next january (4 months away!) though I am not sure about the rear camera, maybe we will just get another vga camera because I don't imagine apple want people using it as a normal camera. I completely disagree. This simplification is a breath of fresh air. A lot of these ancillary features are better handled by the Touch, which is now their most-popular iPod, so why continue to cram them into the Nano? Video was an afterthought in an attempt to keep it fresh. They ended up bloating it.

By dumping all these features that are not optimised for the screen size and focussing on what it's really good at--audio--I think it's a much stronger product.

It's definitely a good idea to ditch the camera and possibly video but it makes sense to me to have it a little bit larger maybe a 4cm x 4cm screen because some people would have trouble trying to scroll on a screen that small. I'll have to check one out before i'm convinced that it was a good move for them.

I completely disagree, video was what made me buy the 3rd gen nano and it was amazing. Before i got my iphone it was great to check my calendar. I dont know how many countless hours on the train i played "phased". It wasnt bloated at all.The camera on the newish one, is still used by my female friend to upload quick videos to facebook.

Just doing one thing good these days is a defeatist attitude to design. This is meant to be the era of convergence not a separate device for each task.

IMO the nano should be the shuffle and their should be something a bit bigger than what we got for the nano.

The nano was meant to be the ipod classic but smaller, but what we have got now is a shuffle with a touch screen.

I would feel ripped off if i buy something for $200 that JUST does audio, when both premium(apple) and generic brands have done video for the best part of a decade. Maybe 5 years ago they could have got away with this but now its just lazy

I am also considering grabbing either a Nano or a Touch.
Haven't really thought about it that much though.

My old white Nano - hasn't been used since the touch came out...
suspect it is dead actually.
I think my iPod touch is first gen - 16GB

so do I:
Buy a new touch - means potentially I can have all my music on it (64GB one) which I like the idea of - even almost bought a Classic a couple of months ago... or
Buy a new nano - I travel a lot and have a work iPhone and personal iPhone, and then on travelling trips often take either my iPad or Mac Book Air.

Before you say - iPhone's are iPods as well - I prefer to listen to music on my iPod touch so as to not drain my iPhone battery (e.g. long flights, hotels etc)

Might have to go in to a reseller and have a play... I'm bored today anyway - so could use a distraction! ;)
