My daughter's 20 inch White Core Duo intel imac is refusing to start up.

No sounds at all - like it is not plugged in

I have tried different power points - no help.

Any ideas??

Peter

Hi

I had the same type of trouble with my iMac, it turned out to be the power supply. it could be that

I got it fixed at a shop for $260 but you can get one of eBay for 80-130 and do it yourself.

hope that helps

Could it be the internal battery?

Have you tried resetting the PRAM

If there's nothing going on at all then there's a pretty reasonable chance it's the power supply.

If you get close and listen you may hear a fan running - in that case, it might not be the power supply but other internal component failures.

If you're fairly technical you can try resetting PRAM, swapping out the RAM, and so on. If you're not, I'd suggest it's time to take it to a repairer.

Thanks for the advice.

I took out and reseated the ram
Also tried resetting the PRAM - but there was still no response.
I could not check the battery as I could not open the case as it looks like a strange screw - my screwdrivers don't fit.

The when I was looking for an extension cord so I could work on it on my dining room table I found an old grey power cord. I tried that and it turned on.

I then switched back to the white iMac cord, and that works now too!!

I had removed and firmly put that white cord in at least 6 times before.

Anyway problem solved - for now.

Thanks for the help.
