This guy's idea is interesting... but surely someone (probably Apple themselves) have tried this already before they went bragging about how impenetrable our beloved OS is to viruses...

What do you think?

I think Jack Campbell (the dumbass ex-con who runs macmice, or whatever it's called now) tried to get someone to do it and put up like 10 grand or something.

Needless to say when people caught wind of it, and how legally stupid it would be for him, he took it down.

It does often surprise me though that no virus writer, hacker or "l33t" group have tried to make a name for themselves by writing the first virus for OS X. I'd say there'd be some mad props and geek cred for the one who does it.

Edit: There's an applematters story on the PR nightmare it caused jack campbell here (http://www.applematters.com/index.php/section/comments/the_25000_os_x_virus_challenge_anatomy_of_a_pr_nig htmare/). And it was 25000 and not 10000

When I think virus I think Michaelangelo, Millenium Bug (Bigone!!), and SOBig etc

I think viruses are things that bring down Operating Systems so

Apple are full time virus writers, OSX is the virus.

Instead of targeting the Windows OS it infects the users.

At present it has infected up to 3 - 4% of the market and is spreading like wildfire through spyware such as iTunes and ITMS (obligatory Hurry up), trojans like the iPods and malware such as quicktime.

Nortons tried to slow it down but they went to Tiger infection level and they had to start from scratch.

It cannot be stopped!!!

All in jest my friends :D

PS - I could walk all over the permissions on folders on a test Win 2003 Server, i was near today with the most basic of active directory user privaleges with OSX. So good - also a little scary!

As much as I'd love to know for sure that OS X is completely virus-free, I don't think the publicity would be a good thing.

Shhhhhh... we have the best OS... don't tell anyone!

this has been attempted before, pre-OSX...

though the most recent attempt involving Jack Campbell was a fiasco mainly because it involved Jack Campbell...!!

OS 9 definitely did have viruses!

Not many though.

I remember one worm that was probably circa OS 8.

I'm pretty sure I had a machine that was infected. It was easy to get rid of though.

Does anyone have some links on this?
