sounds like you may need to get a replacement drive. happened to a mate of mine, who had the same issue. a disc cleaner failed to rectify the issue

What model is it?

To find this out: Go to the Apple in the top left hand corner -> About This Mac -> More Info... -> Model Identifier.

Hi,

It's a MacBookPro3,1

Purchased early 2008.

I have looked up other similar posts and it sounds like I have a dead drive.

I would have a go a putting a new one in etc if I was told what to buy as in Pioneer etc etc.

Cheers

Some models that will fit are UJ-857-C, UJ-867, or GSA-S10N.

Instructions on how to replace it are here: Installing MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Models A1226 and A1260 Optical Drive Replacement - iFixit (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Core-2-Duo-Models-A1226-and-A1260-Optical-Drive-Replacement/669/1)
