Hey guys and girls, I just bought an older macbook pro, 1.83Ghz intel core duo 512mb 80gb. Can anyone tell me if there is a site that can tell you if the computer is registered or what year it is?

This site also gives you some other info, like build week and location.

Now I've tried to install the OS from my macbook pro from last year and its a 10.5.6. Not allowed it tells me.... Any ideas? try another OS disk or something?

You can't use the model specific OS install discs (Grey in colour) from another machine. You need to buy a retail or upgrade version of Leopard (OS 10.5.X) or Snow Leopard (10.6.X).

Newer is always better, so I recommend Snow Leopard as your machine is capable, and you can keep up with latest developments/updates. I've run Snow Leopard on machines slower than yours perfectly fine.

Yes, when setting up the machine after you have reinstalled the OS, use the Migration Assistant to transfer files.
