I haven't heard anything about how many have been sold, however it was in the news today that most stores sold out the stock in the first two hours of opening.

I wouldn't believe any media reports. If it's not reported by Apple, it's a guess. E.g. Brisbane iPad Release Fails To Meet Expectations (http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/technology/more-browsing-than-buying-at-brisbane-ipad-launch-20100528-wjcp.html)

I got my ipad at the regent street store in london there were thousands lineing up I have never seen so many. I was no 277 they had so many ipads they were bringing them up from the basement in crates absolutly no sign of them running out. That store will move many many many thousand of them alone.

I just hope Apple makes enough to finally bury Microsoft under Apple sauce for years.

Trouper: careful what you wish for. I do agree with you though, but Google is the more dangerous opponent IMO. I'd use a sports metaphor at this point, if i knew any which i don't... Something about something coming out of no where.

I'm hoping they (Google) just keep Apple innovating. Having used someones HTC desire the other day, well, I really hated it, it was that good. And the ad campaign with the fingers ripping off Apples ads?

Sorry, rant. Thread back on track in 3, 2, 1...

Is it legal to marry physical objects in Australia? Coz this iPad's look'n mighty fine...

The only report I found, which didn't actually say any figures, was saying that the iPad was more popular than the Mona Lisa... wtf? Oh - there's an AppleStore at the Louvre... :) Bigger queue for iPads than for viewing the ML.

The whole story of Apple being bigger than MS is irrelevant until it's relating to market share.

Not that I had the money spare, but checked them out today at David Jones. Touch keyboard is still a tad too small for me... cute toy... give it a few years, I'll get one. (Or if I sell the Zed)

Aussies snap up 30,000 iPads on day one | News.com.au (http://www.news.com.au/technology/ipad/aussies-snap-up-30000-ipads-on-day-one/story-fn5knrwy-1225872802569)

If TNT had 27,000, then the figure of 30,000 from news.com.au could only be considered realistic if for over the counter sales... so, say 60,000? And expecting another 20,000 this weekend... 80,000...

0.4% of the population of Australia... or about 2% of households. In 3 days.

Interestingly, with around 500,000 sold in the USA... as a percentage... we're double them...

Australia recently became the fifth largest iPhone market in the world by volume. When you consider our relatively small population it really says something. Another recent stat is that over 90% of web pages viewed on a mobile device in Australia are viewed on an iPhone.

Aussies really love the iPhone and now they love the iPad.

I hope iPad sales aren't held back too much by shortages. I'd rather that they just sell as many as possible. Let's hope we add our fair share to the global total and hit 10 million by the end of 2010 (although 6 to 8 is more realistic).

There's also this article (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/05/28/apple_expected_to_sell_700k_ipads_overseas_beating _the_mac.html) which estimates the number allotted to each of the 9 countries.

In short, they estimate that there were around 37,000 iPad slated ;) for Australia.

With such strong demand, I can understand why they have quoted June-ish for those that pre-ordered late.
