no they have all sorts of copy protection on them they won't play unless its with itunes.

it would make their stupid apple tv rather redundant if it was too easy.

That's right, you either have to connect your mac or an apple TV to your TV to do it.

I've got the last Macbook (April 09) before firewire was discontinued.

I went to the Applestore at Chermside to buy a cable to connect to my Panasonic Viera plasma tv, but they didn't have one, nor could they tell me which one to purchase from the online applestore.

Would anyone here be kind enough to point me in the right direction? :)

What kind of display port does it have? Mini DisplayPort? If so you just need a Mini DisplayPort to VGA or DVI adapter, and a DVI or VGA cable to plug into your TV. Which one depends on which port you have on your TV.

EDIT: just checked, you need the Mini-DVI to VGA or DVI adapter. Search the online store for that.

EDIT2: here: Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter - Apple Store (Australia) (http://store.apple.com/au/product/M9320G/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY) and Apple Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter - Apple Store (Australia) (http://store.apple.com/au/product/M9321G/B?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY)

Thanks for the input guys. The Carindale JB hifi store sells macs and has a most helpful mac guy there.

The gear needed was an apple branded mini dvi to dvi adapter sourced instantly from JB hifi. A female dvi to dvi adapter, and a length of dvi to dvi cable from Hardly normal, also in store. I set it up a half hour ago and all's working. :)
Total cost $125.00
