I have just bought a second-hand Intel iMac.
The previous owner left his log-in intact but I don't have the password.
I am trying to boot from an install DVD by holding down C at restart but cannot get to the install screen. Just keeps going to the log-in screen. I have tried a few keyboards to eliminate that.

Help please.

When I try holding down the option key - I get a grey screen with a padlock and a blank text-box.

That sounds like a firmware password.

Turn machine off, pull out one of the RAM chips.
Turn it on and reset the PRAM straight away.
Machine will boot to a login prompt. Shut down and put the RAM back.
Turn on again and try booting from DVD again.

If this is confusing just google for bypassing iMac firmware password.

Leon,

That did it.
Thank you.
