View Full Version : Can You Put A Superdrive In An Ibook?

Is it possible to get a DVD burner that can go into a G4 ibook? I have seen references to an MCE drive http://www.mac-pro.com/s.nl/sc.2/category....it.A/id.1622/.f (http://www.mac-pro.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.143/it.A/id.1622/.f) on some US websites, but not in Australia.

Does anyone know anything about these, and where you can get them in Australia?

Also, will this superdrive here work in an iBook?

A 12" iBook looks really good, but a dvd burner would be a nice upgrade later on if it's possible.

if it is a slot loading one, then yes it will... if not then it will but you will need to take the white bracket off the iBook.

Slot or tray loader DVD burner: yes, it's possible.

Easy to install: no (and if you can't do it yourself, taking it to your reseller will be $$$).

Most notebook DVD burners are single layer - dual layer drives are expensive and rare. Your options are to get a DVD burner installed in a new iBook (just get a CD-R/RW drive instead?) or get an external, cheap dual layer DVD drive for ~ $150.

I don't mind it being hard to install (I'm a budding engineer and compulsive tinkerer - I've been known to pull things apart just to see how they put it together), but where do I get one?

And I don't really need/want a DL burner, since DL media still costs 10 times more then normal DVD blanks.

I might just get an external case, put the LG +/-/8X/DL burner from my desktop pc in there, and put a combo drive or maybe even a DVD read only drive in the PC..... but if it's going to cost me under $200 bucks to get an inbuilt burner for the iBook, then internal would be the way to go....

There is an earlier thread on this topic that I replied to with some links of a howto guide for it.
