Okay, so when i press sleep from the apple menu the screen shuts of and then i close the lid and that little light at the bottom right hand corner fades on and fades off. When I open my lid again the screen comes back on without the need to press any key. Is this right? Is this what the sleep mode should do?
Because it's basically the same as if you'd just not click sleep and just close the lid, isn't it?

(on windows you have to press the keyboard or move the mouse for the screen to pop back on...)

Yes, that's how it is supposed to work. No need to hit sleep in the apple menu before closing the lid either.

Close the lid: Sleep mode
Open the lid: Wakes up

Close the lid: Sleep mode
Open the lid: Wakes up

If you don't want your Mac to sleep when you close the lid, I recommend a little app called Insomniax. Just add it to your login start up items, and it will sit in the menu bar doing nothing until you activate it.

That light fading on and off is your mac snoring :-)
