Friend of mine who moved to NYC from Perth, WA he picked up one for me and has sent it, here was his experience:

I went down to this apple store Apple Retail Store - West 14th Street (http://www.apple.com/retail/west14thstreet/) It's 3 levels and its just five minutes walk from my place cos I'm on west10. Actually I only took one photo and it was after a lot of people had already gone inside so there is not too much to see, since its just in the street and I was hurrying up the queue.

When I arrived they had a large line out the front and the 3 levels inside were full up with people, however they had water for people in the line and the large mass of staff were really friendly, also the line moved fairly quickly. Inside they had different things on different levels and they had hundreds of staff helping people and providing demo's etc. Also there was plenty of ipads around to grab one and spend as much time as you wanted to have a play.

The launch was really well done. The staff in the blue shirts walk around with iphones with Credit Card devices attached, so you make the purchase on the iphone, they ask you for your email address, swipe your card, email you the receipt and they grab the box from out the back somewhere. If you wanted to crack your box open they had a spot upstairs where you could run through setup of your devices and they had people for support in case you needed it.

I was surprised how well the whole thing was run and it was planned well, so I imagine they must have had plenty of iPads and other stock/accessories out the back ready to be sold. The shop is actually really nice and I would think it's not one of the biggest in New York but they have some really nice stuff in there. I know there is one uptown that I think must be the main store.

Buying anything from Apple via an Apple Store (brick and mortar) on day of release is a really good event.

I've done it 2 or 3 times now and they make it extremely special.

Just wish the Apple Store in Perth would have been ready for release when it comes out later this month.

I waited 9 hours outside the apple store in Sydney for the iPhone 3G... it was probably the best 9 hour wait of boredom I'd ever experienced and would happily do it again.... With apple, waiting is as exciting as getting your grubby little hands on the item!

My thoughts exactly. I remember lining up all day at the same store, and it was an awesome experience.

Thats so true. I remember lining up for the opening of the Sydney store and it was an event and a half! It was so much fun.

As the geek who did the overnight at Sydney and a very early start at Doncaster I really respect the Apple staff. They looked after myself and my family really well and anyone who does that, I respect. In Sydney security tried to move on Rochelle and tell her that she could not stay. Once an Apple staff member found out she was there they all came out, welcomed her, gave her a snack and water and told security to make sure no one moved her or disrupted her. I was shocked how well they cared for someone who was sitting in the street.

Also when Doncaster openend I was there early and my daughters came over later and queued at the back. The Apple staff came out brought them to me and gave the girls each some water.

Very impressed and if any of them are reading, I know they do, I will always be thankful for the way you looked after my family.

Pulling an all nighter at an Apple Store is phenomenal. I did it for the Robina opening and plan to do it again for iPad. I can't Wait!
