<h4><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-5894" title="statue-of-liberty" src="http://www.mactalk.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/statue-of-liberty.jpg" alt="statue-of-liberty" width="146" height="275" />This post is 3rd in the <a href="http://www.mactalk.com.au/category/mactalk-in-new-york/" target="_blank">MacTalk in New York</a> series, where Pete and I blog about going to New York to obtain iPads on the 3rd of April. If you haven't been keeping up, <a href="http://www.mactalk.com.au/category/mactalk-in-new-york/" target="_blank">check out the other posts in the series</a>.</h4>
There's been <a href="http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/computers/apple-fanatics-prepare-for-ipad-launch-mania-20100323-qsgi.html" target="_blank">a lot</a> of <a href="http://apcmag.com/melbourne-mac-fan-flies-to-us-to-bring-back-the-first-ipad-in-australia.htm" target="_blank">talk</a> about me going to NY, but I have a travelling companion! Mr. Peter Wells (aka <a href="http://twitter.com/fulltimecasual">fulltimecasual</a>) will be there scoring iPads with me. He had this to say:

<em>I can wait a couple of weeks for an iPad - so why the hell am I going?!?</em>

<em>Well, partly to carry iPads for Anthony, partly to record the crazy bastard, partly because when he first started talking about flying to America just for an iPad, I insisted if he was doing it, he had to go to the 5th Avenue store. I might have oversold the magic of NYC a little too much and somehow i got roped in.</em>

<em>At this stage I'm not even planning on buying an iPad at launch for myself, so hopefully i can provide a nice contrast to Anthony, who seemed ready to burst last time we spoke… Or maybe sleeping in front of an Apple store with the crazy bastard will convince me to buy five. Who knows?</em>

<em>I also didn't know, until he told me last week, that Anthony has never been overseas. With that in mind, dragging the boy from St. Albans around Manhattan should be entertaining enough, even if the iPad turns out to be a dud - although, whatever happens in SoHo stays in SoHo!</em>

<em>I hope you guys enjoy the stuff we post on the trip!</em>

<em>--Pete</em>

He leaves for the Big Apple tomorrow morning and I will be meeting him there on Friday night.

Keep an eye out on the blog for another post about what nerd tools we're taking with us on the trip, and for next week's podcasts, which will come direct from New York!

My suggestion of a crazy thing to do in NY (Must do some crazy stuff, it is NY): EAT hot dogs @ each street you cross in NY while you are waiting for the traffic light to turn green. =)))

Ouch! He might be the one turning green with that advice!!! :laugh: We want the poor boy to fit on the plane on the way back! Especially those getting precious iPads.

PS. If I wanted to donate a small something Anthony how might I do that? You're doing a great thing to offer to get iPads for other people.

now this is an interesting question. say one wants to throw $20 or $50 towards the collective insanity fund - you know, this is such a nutty idea i really want to be a part of it - is there a donation box, perhaps shaped like an overweight labrador?

Whilst flattering - the EFA (http://www.efa.org.au/support2010/) needs your money more than I do right now :)

Heheh Anthony mentioned in App developers are gearing up for Apple's iPad - USATODAY.com (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2010-03-24-ipadapps24_CV_N.htm)

"Alex Peters and her team at Melbourne, Australia-based Firemint are going to extreme lengths to get their hands on an iPad to try to adapt Flight Control for the iPad. The iPad won't go on sale in Australia until May at the earliest. So Peters is working with a local Aussie who's flying to New York to buy as many iPads as he can."

I've never heard from Firemint about iPads! So does that mean someone else from Melb is going over to NY to score iPads? :)

According to an article I read (http://www.smh.com.au/technology/tough-for-buyers-but-ipod-price-signals-economic-rise-20100323-qs09.html) on SMH along with my knowledge one would think that fulltimecasual (pete) should score himself one so that he can save money if he intends on ever getting one, plus pete you could sell it and make profit because i'm sure there will be a guy here (http://forums.mactalk.com.au/sale/) or on ebay that will pay top dollar to get his hands on one before the aussie release. Do me a favour and buy one for yourself, I can't afford one otherwise i'd have asked anthony to grab me one

Not even to NZ or something? Getting off this rock would be a good eye opener for you. I thought you're 25+?

I was 30 before I made it any further than regular trips between Australia and New Zealand. I love the whole travel process, from the moment you walk into the airport, in fact from the moment you put your bags in the cab and drive away from your house :) It's funny how quickly you become a pro at the whole thing, all it takes is a couple of flights and you work out the little nuances: the best seats in certain types of plane, the easiest way through customs, the easiest time to get into the plane toilet :) I envy Anthony a little, that first big long-haul flight is terrifying and exciting at the same time. I just hope you're on a couple of different airlines because being stuck on a plane with the same movies both ways can suck the big one.

I will bet good money that after this trip, Anthony's spending habits will include flights as well as tech gear/gadgets etc..

Well, I went to Malta when I was 4/5 (in 1990) and lived there for about 6 months, but that doesn't really count. And yeah, I'm 25.

I am not sure if this has been mentioned before but when you get to NYC drop into a Wallgreens or CVS pharmacy and grab some Melatonin. Take 2 30 mins before bed and it will signifigantly help you with Jetlag

Also grab some Alli on the way home. You can sell that stuff at a huge profit too. Or use it yourself after all that U.S food!

Alli !?!?! That is sold here in Australia as Xenical and the stuff is lethal (I don't mean literally) but unless you are rock solid on your fat intake, you'll lose weight just by virtue of the fact that you don't normally eat while sitting on the toilet !!!

Hi everyone! I had a 5:30am phone call with USA Today, and I told Jeffrey the story of the epic Mactalk.com.au trip to New York to get iPads. I also sent him a link and details how to contact Anthony in case he wanted to follow up. Separately, I mentioned that one of my good friends moved to New York not so long ago, and would be buying and FedExing some iPads over to us (one for me personally to use because I just can't wait, and a few others for the studio). I guess it all got mashed up somehow! Also notice how Firemint is suddenly "my" team, which is a surprise to me as well as the rest of the studio... ;) Aaah, got to love early mornings!

Cheers

Alex

Still counts =p

I didn't want to leave NY...not sure if you'll feel the same.

One thing you'll hate when you get back to Aus/Melbourne is the inability to get a damn cab off the street compared to NY.

"Apple's iPad is already shipping to customers who pre-ordered early, to arrive before Easter."

They ordered early.. with instore pickup.. they arent just turning up on the day to pluck some off the shelf.
