View Full Version : Recommend me a sub-woofer

20th March 2010, 04:16 PM
I've been thinking about adding a sub-woofer to my existing 5 speaker surround system, but have no idea about what to buy. Can anyone recommend a good quality sub-woofer for around $300-400?

By no measure am I a hi-fi purist, and I figure that a subby is probably the least important speaker as far as acoustic specs are concerned (although I may well be wrong). I just want something to add a bit of oomph to the low end when I'm watching DVDs.

Current system is Marantz SR5200 amp with Bose 301 series 2 bookshelf as main L&R.

I have the Yamaha YST-320, which i have had for 8 yrs and i can not say a bad thing about it. I mainly use it for 5.1 Movies. I also used to have the Bose 301's and they were quite good for the price. (please no Bose comments)

The sub and centre channel would be the most important part of a 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 system.
As long as the sub can go at least 20Hz or lower.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Can you give any credence to technical specs (size of driver, frequency response, etc.), or do you really need to listen to a few before you buy? Given that it's only doing the low frequency effects, what should you be listening for?
