I attempted to upgrade my Intel imac from OS 10.4 (Tiger) directly to 10.6, but received an error message saying 'mac os X can't be installed on this computer'. The disk I attempted to use is the installation disk for a new imac. Is the problem that I don't have 10.5 installed, or is there something in that copy of the software preventing installation on anything other than a brand new imac?

a) Grey label instal discs (that come with each specific Mac) are designed FOR that Mac... Whilst they MAY work on other Macs, there may be problems with the instal. So, this MAY be the issue.

b) Snow Leopard (10.6) is meant to be an upgrade from 10.5, so this may also be the reason...?

You generally can't use the install disk from another machine. You must purchase a legitimate copy.

And not generally, specifically will not install on another machine's system install disc period. You need the retail install DVD, a black disc.
