Specs as expected

20 GB --> AUD$499
40 GB --> AUD$649

The Australian prices are disappointing when compared to Appletalk's estimation of

"that would mean (on a strict conversion, and a more probable figure):
20GB = AUD340 (more likely AUD399)
40GB = AUD477 (more likely AUD499)"

* Est. Build Time
3-5 days

Well, last night, apple revealed for the first time (officially) the fourth generation iPod.. It seems slashdot (the world famous geek news site) was a bit slow to the uptake.. Have a look at this article on the frontpage of slashdot

The 20gb doesn't come with a dock either. :(
But the 40gb seems like good value. $584 (educational discount) and a dock.

I like on the iPod page on the Apple store there is:

iPod Etiquette.
Remove both earbuds:
During a job interview
Taking your driver’s test
When your sweetie calls

Remove one earbud:
Listening for your flight
Buying groceries
When a coworker calls

Leave ’em in:
Visiting the inlaws
At the laundromat
When your boss calls

Well lets do some quick maths.

Old 20gig iPod cost me around $599 new.

New 20gig iPod with now missing accessories will cost around $724

Thats a price increase people!

Haven't got it yet, he's waiting until Wednesday for some more offers, but yeah. I should have it next week.

Should I wait for my mini? Or go for the new 4G

Bit of a personal call there - it's taken me most of today to come to peace with the fact that I'm going to have to go out and buy a third party iPod case for my new 40GB - though the lack of remote wasn't as big a deal for me...

It really depends what you want in the end - the click wheel is no longer a distinction, so it comes down to a matter of size and space.

(and the dock).

The 20gb is like the old 15gb - no accessories at all.

I ordered my 40gb today, and purchased a brand new carry case and remote from eBay (US) for about $65 total shipped. Works out to be around $650, and I get everything the 3G 20/40gb iPods come with (except 4p-6p adapter).

Cheers,
- Febs.

Thanks. Though many seem to have their mini ipods delivered already, both 4G and mini should be on display in stores this weekend, I will just have to look at both and decide. mini looks the goods for my use though, I get the impression from reviews that the mini may be better suited to exercising than the 3G or from the look of that vulnerable skin, the 4G!!!

'Many'??? Hmm... I wouldn't say that yet - well, at least not until my order is fulfilled!!! :P

I did some calculations on previous and current iPod prices in Australia versus USA:

U.S. 3rd Generation iPod Prices
15Gb:$299
20Gb: $399
40Gb: $499

Aust. 3rd Generation iPod Prices
15Gb:$449
20Gb: $598
40Gb: $799

Percentage Increase from US price
15Gb: 50%
20Gb: 50%
40Gb: 60%

U.S. 4th Generation iPod Prices
20Gb: $299
40Gb: $399

Aust. 4th Generation iPod Prices
20Gb: $499
40Gb: $649

Percentage Increase from US price
20Gb: 67%
40Gb: 63%

Four points of comment:
1. a 3rd generation iPod that cost $299 in the US cost AUD$449 here (the 15Gb model). Now, a 4th gen iPod that costs $299 in the US costs AUD$499 here - $50 more.

2. The price mark-up from USA to Aust for the 20Gb iPod has gone from 50% to 67%, a 17% extra loading, when (I think) the Aussie dollar has not changed more then 2-4% recently.

3. The new 20Gb iPod does not include a case, a remote or a dock. in Australia these cost $197 to add, making the cost of buying a 20Gb 4th Generation with equivalent extras $692, whereas the 3rd Generation 20Gb iPod (with accessories) was $598, or almost $100 cheaper.

4. Even the top model (40Gb) does not come with remote, making its total cost $724, halving the perceived price reduction of $150 down to $75

They look pretty nice but with so many extras stripped from the 20gb, I’ll be keeping my third gen.

I wonder if we are going to be seeing 3rd generation 20Gb iPods on ebay where the remote control has been “lost” ;-)

The iSKin eVo is good. THey should have a 4th Gen case soon.

A lot of people claim the Apple case scratches the iPod anyway.

Yeah, I'll be the first to admit that they do - what gets to me is the $75 factor... anyway, what can you do?

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else tried to contact Apple Australia regarding the lack of remote/case and what they said/did for you... people in the US and UK have been having a merry old time getting their orders upgraded because the tech specs pages were wrong - why for once was Apple Australia more competent than the US and the rest of the world??!!
