Interesting decision by the AFL. The $5.99 up front cost only gets you the first 30 days of access, beyond that you need to purchase (in-app) ANOTHER $5.99 subscription for the next 30 days of access.

So a year's worth (7 months to cover you from now to the Grand Final) is $41.93.

Compared to the MLB at Bat app, which offers live video streaming of games - something the AFL app doesn't, and is only $17.99 in Australia, this looks a pricey decision.

It's currently number 6 in the Aussie App store for paid apps... but I wonder how many people will start complaining in 30 days time not realising everything other that the top 4 news stories gets turned off if you don't purchase another $5.99 subscription.

I would expect that to be pulled from the app store VERY soon. It uses AFL licensed IP without the okay from the AFL. That's a lawsuit ready to explode right there.

If you want something free that is actually legal, try the Slattery one here (http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/footy-lite/id317808867?mt=8).

And fucking Telstra! First they bigpondify all the team websites making them lumbery hard to navigate trash holes, and now this fucking crap. Grrrrr.

Or you can use Footy Lite for FREE.

The iPhone is one product Telstra hates but is forced to support, so their strategy remains the same. Create an app that could be great, gouge the customers shamelessly, and when it fails use it as an excuse to push their own crappy alternative that they control fully.

Optus tried to pull similar crap with their Sydney Festival app (which was free), but which had T&C that basically allowed Optus to send you endless spam.

I love footy and would be willing to pay up to $20 for a good afl app with video radio and the like but $6 every 30 days is just crap!!!Footy lite and aussie rules live will have to do coz there is no way i am giving Telstra any more money per month!

I thought AFL Live uses info licensed from Sportal?

Amen to that - Telstra has shit all over the AFL's internet presence and ruined it for everyone.

As Telstra aren't charging their own customers to use this app over the NextG network, then I think that $6 per month isn't too bad.
Depends on the quality of the video's etc.

For everyone else who isn't on Telstra, and will have to pay to download the video content, then the deal isn't too good for them.

When you put it like that leon. it makes my $79 cap with $10 of data with telstra look better. So it would work out that i would pay $95 a month but i get all of that AFL news, video and radio data free.

I can't wait until this fails and they realise what it's really worth.
Suck it, AFL and Telstra.

RE: Jailbroken iPhone screenshots.
What a failure.

If they're charging that much for the app, they should NOT be putting advertising in the app, even if it is for their own services; ie: bigpond sport.

Hah, if you look at the app info page then the AFL link goes to bigpond.com and the Telstra Corp link goes to afl.com.au.

Hmmmm..failure or not, get used to it. I'd say this will be the plan with all the newspaper and magazine apps coming out for the iPad.

I'm pretty sure that Jailbreaking your phone is against the terms of the developer agreement. If Apple pick this up there might be a bit of a smack on the hand for Telstra/AFL.

wow, what a rip-off! At first I kinda balked at the intial price, but $6 a month? For information I can find elsewhere on the web for free? Call me a tightarse, but I'd rather look harder for my footy info

Unfortunately it is, yeah. Heck, technically you agree to never hack any Apple product at all! Would be funny if someone got put on notice for having XBMC on their AppleTV or something

They've changed the screenshots in iTunes, though not on their own site (http://www.afl.com.au/mobile/iphoneapp/tabid/15022/default.aspx).

Interesting decision to charge a monthly subscription, I see in the reviews they are already getting a lot negative reactions.

Looking forward to seeing how it all panes out for them.

Last year I used (and paid for) Footy Live but the new layout sucks and it's now got advertising in an app I'd already paid for :thumbdn:

The Official AFL app at $5.99 every 30 days is overpriced IMO so scratch that too.

I've switched to the Triple M Footy Lite app which whilst only having basic features has sensible menus, runs fast and it's free.

I have "Rugby LIVE" which sounds like it might be from the same developer because exactly the same thing happened with this app to. Paid for it last year, because it deserved to be paid for IMO.

Now the whole layout is crap - can't find the simple things - and I have to put up with ads from carsales all the time.

I don't mind the Footy Live guys trying to make money from the installed base of their app. The ad isn't really that intrusive. But the interface is horrible. Information is being presented in perhaps a third of the screen space, the rest is taken up by their footy theme.
