Used to use Total Commander in my PC days to do this. Say I have thirty files with some text in a filename that is common to all thirty but that I either want to remove or change globally. How do you do that in OS X?

There's a preconfigured applescript to do that from memory, worth taking a look at i think. or perhaps it was a folder action script. I can't remember sorry but look into those.

I've used A Better Finder Rename for years and recommend it.

You already have the app to do it. It comes with OS X and is in /Applications/Automator.

Automator rocks.

NameChanger (http://web.mac.com/mickeyroberson/MRR_Software/NameChanger.html) is free and very good.
