An email I wrote to Steve jobs back in 2007.

Hi Steve
I hope you get the chance to read this. I suspect you're heard a million different ideas for how to utilise multitouch in Apple products in the future. I'm hoping this idea is somewhat original and of interest to you.

Product - A secondary display that will enable multitouch display without requiring significant redevelopment of existing Mac models.

Form factor - A thin panel powered by a laptop battery, with a 13" glass display with multitouch capability.
Connectivity - wireless (or maybe cabled for early models) - I suspect 802.11N should be capable

Advantages and selling points:
Ability to display customised controls for different apps. eg: a mixing desk for garage band, a scrubbing desk for FCP.
Ability to add a second display + multitouch to existing Macs without disrupting the desktop/laptop paradigm people are familiar with.
Significant way to differentiate between Windows machines and Mac's
If you like this idea, then please develop it. I really really could do with one for my work. :D

I think the iPad might just do this job. Developers, get cracking.

Until someone comes up with a mixing desk and a scrubbing desk you could use the TouchPad app on your iPad ;)

Cheers
Steffen.

There's also a few wireless numeric keypads and some specialist keypads for sketchup, photoshop, etc already available.
