I downloaded open office to the Mac. It downloaded and went into the apps folder ok.
Initial opening the app was ok, it asked about fonts etc but then after all that it did not open to anything. It placed an icon (with triangle) in the dock bar but nothing else.

I then forced a quit and tried again, this time something called X11 opened in a terminal and wanted a password to load Open Office, luckily with a bit of Linux knowledge I knew to give it the sudo command then my password. Open Office appeared to open a window.

Next time I closed it I had to go through all the same procedure again.

I know I am a Newbie and I am sure I'm doing something simple wrong but as far as getting programs downloaded and installed on this Mac, well give me windows anytime.

What version did you download? porting: Download OpenOffice.org for Mac OSX (http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/index.html) has two version available. Perhaps you should download the Aqua version. It should run without X11.

Have you tried NeoOffice? 3.0.1 is available now, 3.0.2 available to all users 2/2/10

NeoOffice NeoOffice Home (http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php)

I think it was 2.4.4. I googled for 'stable download open office for Mac' and that was the hit/link I got so just ran with that.
Every time I've tried to google for Neo Office I get a link to open Office.

What the heck is X11 anyway? Do I need it? Can I just disable/remove it?

Wikipedia is your friend
X Window System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_Window_System)

Do you need it? If you want to run applications ported over to the Mac that use X11, then it is.

I use GIMP on my Macs (Photoshop substitute), so for me, yes it is.
GIMP - for Mac OS X (http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/)

I also use Wine/WineBottler to run some Windows apps on my Intel Macs
WineBottler - Run Windows Programs directly on OS X (http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/)
