So what do people think...

Is the metal case (in particular) a clue for where the iPhone is heading?

Will the future iPhone run an apple made CPU?

I for one would love to see the iPhone with a metal backing like the iPad...

Thoughts, or groundless speculation?

:)

Groundless yes, although I would have to agree that the next iPhone may be the same form factor as the iPad.

I doubt it, if you have a look at the iPad gallery (http://www.apple.com/ipad/gallery/) you'll notice the 3G version has a plastic section at the top. My guess that is where the antenna is.

My guess would be a hell yes. Why goto all that trouble for one product? :)

1) native multi tasking
2) unibody construction (alu + plastic hybrid)
3) new chip (if it fits)

thats about it that i can think of for now.

My iPad Nano (Gen 1 iPhone) has "a metal backing like the iPad".

So, if they can do a mostly metal case for the iPad, why can't they do the same for the iPhone again like the original iPhone?

Because of all the antennas in the iPhone. 3G, GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

From the looks of the pics, that plastic strip on the iPad is roughly as wide as the iPhone is long.

I'd love a metal back on the iPhone, but there was a reason why the 3G and 3GS have plastic backs and I cannot see this being overcome in the next model unfortunately.

Yeah, I wondered... I sort of hope apples designers can work a way around it.

No offense, but I really hope your wrong, I'd love to see a metal iPhone (not that I've had any real issues with the plastic though).

Wouldn't the metal be a hotter back to hold?

I think it would look great, although the iPad is a little thicker -

Will the future iPhone run an apple made CPU?

Absolutely. The A4 is a very slick bit of work, and is a quadcore SoC (System-on-a-Chip) based on PA Semi's original PA6T SoC concept.

Both Jobs and Oppenheimer are on record from April 2008 saying they will use PA Semi technologies in "future portable devices".

See, IMO that looks awesome and would give me a big case of irrational up-grade-itis...
