Hi guys,

I recently bought a second hand iBook G3, but have noticed a strange issue with the battery..

When running off the battery, it goes to sleep at about 50% charge.

When I connect it to the power and wake it, it shows the charge at 0%.

When it has charged around 40%, it then jumps right up to 100%!

Anyone know whats going on here?

Thanks. :D

It looks like the battery charge indicator is not accurate.

I have read that every month or you are supposed to run the iBook flat and then plug in the charger and leave the iBook plugged in until it totally recharges.

This is supposed to recalibrate the indicator.

You could try resetting the power management utility to see if that helps as well.

... Shut down the computer.
Simultaneously press and then release the SHIFT-CONTROL-OPTION-POWER keys on the keyboard.
Wait 5 seconds
Press the Power button to restart the computer...

Your battery is worn out and needs replacing.

This happened to my iBook. The percentage figures were somewhat different to yours (mine slept at 90%, although it took a good hour and a half to drop to that level, which was far slower than with a healthy battery)

Anyway the upshot of it is, you need a new battery. That fixed my problem right up.

Can you still get new iBook G3 batteries?

If so, how much, and where from?

I bought one for school the other day $175 ED pricing. Delivered in less than 24 hours. Try the PMU resetting etc first though. If you're getting a fair amount of time from your battery before going flat it may be worth hanging onto for a while.
