I was looking at the tech specs of iMac G3 and I noticed that the G3 uses the same processor as the GameCube. Seeing as I have no use for my GameCube, can it be possible to build a computer from it's parts, and load Mac OS X from it?

Depends on the G3's Processor and which version of OS X you're referring to.

Check it yourself by downloading the superb all-find-it app: MacTracker (http://mactracker.dreamhosters.com/).

why not just mount an old macmini in the cube?

Just because a GameCube uses a G3 doesn't mean it can run a desktop OS - consoles are entirely different beasts compared to something like a Mac. The Nintendo 64 also used a PPC CPU (and the Megadrive a 68K 68000 CPU) - but again, useless for anything but games.

It appears some effort was made to develop Linux on the GameCube, but nothing has happened since 2005 :p

... so keep it for games, in other words.
