MobileMe sync settings

Does anybody know what "automatically" actually means when you set MobileMe to sync automatically? What triggers a sync?

I'm wondering whether I'd be better off setting it to hourly or such to ensure the sync actually takes place.

I have mine set to "Automatically" and it works fine for me, never had a problem.

My emails hit my iphone as quick as the desktop, works great.
