Magellan GPS- Magellan RoadMate for iPhone (http://www.magellangps.com/iphone/iphoneapp.asp)

Only in North America at the moment, they are also introducing a car kit similar to that of Tomtom, but which will provide iPod Touch compatibility as well.

Interesting developments, methinks the competition in the US will hot up even more and that can only benefit us here in Oz in the long run. The very long run.

Agreed. But there are some who love them. And, do we know they will use Navteq in Australia? Not yet. One can always hope for sense to prevail.

They are also making a car mount, like tomtom's however, which I think will have bluetooth and a GPS chip also. Not quite as nice at the tomtom cradle, but definitely the 2nd best. Will probably be cheaper though.

And apparently it will require the purchase of the Magellan app.

They say it will work with any GPS app (http://www.magellangps.com/iphone/images/CradleComingSoon.jpg), so maybe it will be sold seperate. Excelent way to cash in with people who baught other GPS apps!! Pitty TomTom didn't think of that!

I think that they may even be restricted to be able to make a gps cradle restricted to just their app. I think Apple has allowed for an accessory to boost and improve the gps reception of the phone, which is then fed to any app that wants gps info. So any GPS cradle, including Magellan and TomTom, will work with ALL iphone app's, including Google Maps etc.

OK. I just saw the small print at the bottom which refers to the note about iPod Touch. So I am thinking that to get the gps boost, you'll be using magellan on a Touch or first gen iphone. The rest of us, using different apps would gain the benefit of the cradle but not the GPS boost?

The "more info" is in conflict with itself.

I just checked the FAQ and find that there's no reference to this part of the world at all. They are exanding to include other countries but not Oz.

From the FAQ

What map regions are available?

Magellan is offering four map regions for download. The available map regions include US and Canada, Eastern US, Western US and Europe. Each region is sold separately.

Why not contact them and ask for Australian maps to be included?

someone might want to but I am satsified with Sygic (and possibly tomtom). I'm not really interested in an app that will use Navteq maps which for this part of the world are unmitigated crap.

I imagine this will provide competitive pricing with TomTom's dock
