View Full Version : Ration is back! Beta release 8 out now.

16th November 2009, 02:44 PM
Hey guys,

Thanks a lot for all your patience. I realise that it has been a long time coming, but i am really excited to release a significantly re-engineered version of Ration today.

1.0b8 is available through the in-app update, as well as from the link below. You will have to run through the setup assistant again, but it's much better this time, and all the licensing crap is gone (i'm sorry about doing this the first time).

Triggers are now fully available to all providers, and any broken plans and provider plugins should now work again (sorry for the wait TPG users!).

The most exciting part of this release is that it is fully compatible with the new plugin development API due out in the next few days. We really hope some great developers and the community will get behind this, and get Ration compatible as many ISPs as possible. I am just finishing some documentation, but if you want a slightly incomplete copy, or a shout out once it's done, send me a PM or an email:

jedda at blargsoft dot com

We are really wanting a lot of feedback about this release, so if you love or hate something, or have found a bug, new or old, please submit it via the in-app system.

We look forward to hearing from you, and thanks again for waiting.

Any questions, shoot me an email.

If you are having the Internode bug and want it fixed -

Download this:

http://mojo.blargsoft.com/InternodeTest.zip

When it downloads, unzip and open it. It will ask you to install. Click Install, and authenticate to relaunch Ration.

This is an updated plugin that will give you your source in a window when it refreshes. Copy the info in the field, and email it to me at:

jedda@blargsoft.com

I'll try and get you going again tonight.

Thanks for your help!

Jedda,

I've sent you my Internode dump so hopefully can be fixed. I've also shot through a request for a Trigger so I can turn on or off an app based on how much of my daily usage has been used.

Thanks,

Hmm, when Ration stopped work a while ago my usage was 94%.

I installed the new beta and it won't refresh and it still shows 94%

If i go to cycle summary it says last refreshed 90 days ago...

Dunno what's happening!

I'm on TPG

Calculation seems to be weird for TPG, and my usage says 30 days gone and 1 remaining - November only has 30 days. And I reset in two days, not one. Is something wrong with my system? Anyone else from TPG notice this?

No problems here on Optus, but it's been working pretty flawlessly for months.

I'm glad to see the registration process gone and I can't wait to see what we can do with plugins.

Hey guys,

Just pushed a new release that has a debug mode for people with issues with plans/ISPs.

If your plan won't scrape, enable debug mode in:

Preferences > General > Debug Mode

and refresh your source.

A window will appear that allows you to submit your source to us for further viewing and analysis.

We will try and get all users up and running as soon as possible, and appreciate your help!

Any questions, fire away.

Hi,

Me too. Mine is now allowing me to login.

It is also showing up as 55%, but it only has one data amount. I have 20GB Peak/40GB off peak. It is just showing up as 20GB Peak, and saying I have used 11026MB when in actual fact I have used - 13650MB Peak and 21918MB Off Peak.

Jedda,

Just wanted to thank you publicly for the development and support of Ration. The Internode fix was quick and painless.

I'd also like to say thanks for the Trigger support based on Peak Daily Average vs Remaining - it was a feature request I sent you and whether it ended up being my idea or someone elses, just glad to have it in there.

Can you possibly add the option to use "Usage Today" in the filter as well, I could adjust the filter work more effectively against the Peak Remaining Average.

I've also setup a growl notification using the variables options to tailor the message with live usage info. Very cool.

Regards,
Shane.

Aye, seconded. Huge thumbs up for you work mate - Ration is pretty damn cool. :D
[QUOTE=scritch;901495]I've also setup a growl notification using the variables options to tailor the message with live usage info. Very cool.

I tried that as well:
http://www.freshbytes.com.au/images/skitch/informative-20091120-112530.jpg
was all that was shown when I had these prefs set:
http://www.freshbytes.com.au/images/skitch/rationprefs-20091120-112621.jpg

scritch

The text that is in mine is as follows:

(to the left of the box that says "sticky"):
Internode Daily Average exceeds Remaining Average

(in the main text box for config of growl message):
The daily average of (*peakdailyaverage*) has exceeded the remaining daily average of (*peakremainingaverage*)

This was one I was just fooling with - info without "Usage Today" filter isn't worthwhile in this message.

Regards,
Shane.

Great app! But there's some features that would take this app even further into awesomeland... there's a Firefox plugin called Net Usage Item which is used for this exact purpose, but gives more detailed information on your data usage:

Net Usage Info Tue Dec 8 16:23:31 2009
ADSL2+/100GB
: Peak Off-peak
Download: 15722 / 50000 23117 / 50000
MB Remaining: 34278 26883
Time Remaining: 25 d 7 h 25 d
Remaining: 1348 MB/d (21 kB/s) 1075 MB/d (50 kB/s)
Target Deficit: 6727 (4d) 13440 (8d)

Any chance you might consider including this level of detail in Ration? The data remaining (both MB/day and kB/sec) and target surplus (or in my case, deficit) are both particularly useful and would be a welcome addition to your app.

Yup that looks like the stuff, the only things missing are the target surplus/deficit (how far you are in front/behind of where you should be on that day in the month) and kb/sec calculations... My bad for not looking at it more closely...

I'm interested in hacking together a new TPG plug-in.

But I've never coded any objective-C LOL.

I'm a seasoned Java coder, though.

I gather I can use the included sample provider project and hack together the bits that provide the data??

Perhaps we should start another thread for development of plug ins?

"New Transmission Actions - New actions now included that give you finer control over Transmission, including adding torrents, and controlling upload and download speeds."

Where.. can I find these? How does it work exactly? Confused.

I installed the latest version when prompted and had to enter my password 3 times - what's the story there.

Can you implement Exetel?

https://exetel.com.au/members/usagemeter_xml.php?user,password

Example output

SNIP

Here here. I would actually be able to use it if it had Exetel support.

It's pretty much done. I have got it working, and am testing it with a few users at the moment. Just have to tweak it a tad, and then we will be good to go.

In the triggers pane, you can set these actions against specific triggers, like entering or exiting your offpeak period. As seen here (http://cl.ly/101X), you can now add actions to control Transmission.

My bad, Gray. Ration had to authenticate to do the following:

*Install some new Transmission plugins
Update all the older plugins
Update itself

Very messy, and should have happened in one relaunch. I'll do it better next time.

Hey Donnie.

I am in the early stages of recording a series of help videos for Ration. Here is a very preliminary one (not at all polished, so please dont laugh :p) that explains the process of adding a trigger and action.

Ration Quick Guide - Adding a Trigger (http://www.blargsoft.com/resources/QuickTrigger.mov)

Let me know how you go!

Good lil video dude, helped alot. It has a bug though, when the logo comes up at the end some of the audio repeats at a lower quality. Very professional otherwise!

Any chance Amnet could be supported?

They have a usage service here: https://memberutils.amnet.com.au/usage.asmx

Seems to be fairly well documented, too.

Happy to provide some usernames and passwords for testing purposes.

Thanks!

Heya,

For some reason my triggers are not saving. Not sure if I am doing something wrong...

I have set up a trigger to download any apple updates that fires off at 3am (Mon-Sun) if I have less than 80% of my quota remaining. When I click away from the trigger (say, go to the General tab) and then come back again, it is all reset to the default, no days selected, at 1:00:00 PM with no filters. It does remember the action though.

It seems that it needs some kind of save button that I can't see!

Any suggestions?

Cheers!

Well for those with bigpond, I have found (at least a temp solution) another app for free. It has probably already been linked to, so if it has... sorry (feel free to delete this post):

Bigpond Usage Meter Menu Bar (http://url3.tk/?p=bpmb)

It seems to work well, but dosen't look quite as nice as ration, so its just a temp solution for me anyways.

:)

*edit* There is also a widget there too

giving it a try now after i realised node toad was using up a fair chunk of memory (not that im lacking RAM)

anyway, i may have overlooked it but is there a way to change how it looks in the menu bar? eg. instead of showing a percentage, have it show how many GB's remaining? that gives me a much better indication... i noticed "appearance" is greyed out.

Quick note on that, https://exetel.com.au is invalid. https://www.exetel.com.au/ has a valid SSL cert, for whatever reason.

This app looks great- but it's not working for me! I've downloaded the latest version off the site, I do the setup assistant, but then after I hit 'continue' for it to restart to begin using it, it never comes back. It's apparently running according to Activity Monitor.
