View Full Version : Possible Tablet found in iTunes Resources?

As most of us should know, despite the fact it's 2009 and .rsrc files are a dated, awful and pathetic way for an application to hold it's resource images (i.e. all the controls, etc.) iTunes, being that it's an ugly mass of code lumped on top of SoundJam MP's core (SoundJam MP - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SoundJam_MP)), it still uses .rsrc's.

Now, I was browsing the iTunes 8.2.1 .rsrc file today, and I came across something strange. Yes, 8.2.1 - it does not exist in iTunes 9.0+

http://img190.yfrog.com/img190/3538/lbh.png

What is that?!

Could this possibly be the much-rumoured tablet?? Hmmm...

If you'd like to verify this, download a copy of iTunes 8.2.1's .rsrc. I couldn't find it on the 'net (except for windoze versions.. Which don't use .rsrc AFAIK) The only way was to throw my copy that I stole off a fresh install of Snow Leopard 10.6.0 - it's 100% unmodified, "Last modified 29/5/2009 10:09:19am, according to Finder. Get it here: Index of /files (http://shaunr.net/files/) then click iTunes.rsrc.
Now download ThemePark 3 here: http://www.geekspiff.com/download.php?product=themepark_3 . Note that it's incredibly buggy on Snow Leopard, you have to use the arrow keys to navigate.

Now, navigate to PNG -> 2000. There should be the pictured slate-with-nav-wheel-thing-that-sorta-looks-like-a-zune.

Let me know what you think...

EDIT: Oops! Looks like I pointed to a download link for iTunes 8.2.1 for windoze... Oh dear :/ If someone can find a copy, that'd be great. Alternatively, I'll upload my 8.2.1 .rsrc

I think it's a bit of a stretch to say it could be a tablet icon, but it's certainly quite intriguing.
Perhaps it's a design for a potential iPod that Apple scrapped recently?

It does not exist in 8.0.2 or 8.1.

Hey it does exist, this from 8.0.2. The file is marked as bring created on November 2008.

Very nice find.

Looks like a Zune to me.

Looks like a Zune to me.

The zune is rounded at the bottom 'button' and its screen is square, not a zune by any measure.

Of course it's not actually a zune, it just looks more like a zune than an iPod.

Could be that they were in talks to sync with the Zune at one point.

But you could rationalise it as anything really couldn't you ;)

Agreed (see the mockup above).

Disagree, see above - it sort of fits but the form factor is different.

Maybe it was the old tablet that Steve scrapped.

Maybe it's that touch screen remote we heard about a while ago...

Looks a lot like the HTC Touch Dual or HTC Touch 3G. Might even be something to do with the Palm Pre? Possibly they were thinking of supporting generic devices? Or maybe some guy at Apple decided to stick it in there so we would all speculate about it. Definitely not a tablet though.

I expect to hear about this in tech news websites in 3...2...1...

I think some bored programmer stuck it there to see how long it would take to start a rumour.

I can't see it as the tablet. Why would you need the big button thing at the bottom? I would think the tablet would be a whole touch screen, no buttons at all?

I thought Apple were trying to push out its 'multi-touch' technology....why on earth would they go back to the 'button' (or whatever that thing is at the bottom)....seriously.

Move on. :)

What makes you think it's a button and not a track pad.
